Fangame Clear #37
A genuinely nearly perfect fangame. Every single screen of this game is filled to the brim with charm and style that portrays this entire experience as a surreal journey through many different creatures, bosses, gimmicks, stages, and just overall fun. The only small gripe I had was with the final stage, it being more of a moshpit than anything coherent, but that is so small considering the scale of this game. I'm not going to go into much detail because I truly believe this needs to be played fully blind.
Absolutely astonished with this one. A true must-play, and one of my all time favorites.

Excellent long adventure game. The final boss is a pretty significant step up in difficulty from the rest.

GENKI is a cool fangame with a very weird atmosphere. There's definitely some sort of story going on, but all of the text is in a foreign language that I can't read. The gimmicks are very interesting, from mushrooms that remove spikes like Mario koopa shells to blocks that shoot fire to all sorts of hand-drawn animated obstacles. Bosses are equally animated and equally weird with a variety of attacks paired with sometimes over-the-top sound effects. Final boss was definitely a favorite of mine.
I also really liked the idea of combining regular platforming with a little puzzle screen every once in a while, as it made the gameplay feel refreshing and constantly fun to play. My only real complaint with the game is that there is a specific puzzle-heavy stage later in the game that felt like it dragged on a bit too long.

What a great time this fangame was, it really achieves the mark it is seemingly aiming for by creating an atmospheric adventure that remains unique all throughout. There's a lot to say about it, but since the other reviews cover most of it here's my favorite aspects:
First, each stage has its own mechanics to it, that will eventually get combined together in later parts making for some interesting segments, I love when final stages do this especially. Second, most bosses have a part where you can get basically "bonus damage", usually done through shooting one of its projectiles, I found this mechanic pretty fun and it adds a bit of depth to the fights. Third, the black and white stage is one of the best stages in any fangame ever, it truly encapsulates just a great design and execution. Finally, the game is visually great as well, with a lot more variance in tilesets and visuals than most other adventures, all set to give that moody surreal look to it.
I had a nice Genki, I hope you do too.
