I really don't wanna give this game such a low rating, but i can't ignore major issue about this game - M e t r o i d

Detailed thoughts on stages:
-Mario. Actually pretty fun stage, one of the best Mario-based platforming in fangames in general. Boss was also fun
-Mega Man. Pretty enjoyable, boss was actual highlight, very unique and cool
-Cuphead. Astonishing production value, Crimson boss was insanely charming and perfectly designed, you simply can't not fall in love in this stage (even tho i think gameplay can be slightly better, but whatever)
-End is Nigh. Definitely not the best stage for me, lasts too long, repetitave and just not fun in general
-Runner. Pretty fun except last save. Last save just lasts way too long and wasn't enjoyable as well
-Celeste. As the man who didn't played Celeste at any point in life, i was very satisfied. Yeah, the learning process was kinda pain, but after that it was one big fun ride. Probably my favourite stage here

So as you see, nothing truly bad happens until this moment. Except kinda boring End of Nigh stage and fact that up to now there's 3 in row stages without fangames mechanics, nothing to complain about basically. But now...

-Metroid. Oh yeah. Shit happens. Very very big pile of garbage happens. Ok, let's talk about positives. Concept is cool, overall idea is cool, boss is cool (but can be real asshole). Rest sucks big ass. Gameplay was tedious, unfun and very bad in many ways. Repetative enemies that snipes you out of your vision, annoying very long saves, too entangled route for just matter of being entangled and very unfriendly at the start, lack of gimmicks in general, lack of fast traveling (this was most annoying thing in general in this stage), overall feeling of emptiness - everything makes you feel sick while playing this. I usually don't go harsh on easy platforming, because like you know whatever. But this is just such a big pain in the ass, i simply can't ignore this amount of suffering that i get

(I would really like to see this concept executed better and in a standalone game, to make things clear that i don't hate Metroid itself. No, i actually think this can be very huge thing if done properly)

Anyway, once you done with Metroid only one thing left

-Kid's House. Final struggle against Virus boss. Both phases are good, second phase is hard and can be unfair, which is not great, but at least it was unique and memorable

It's real shame this game gets only 5,5 from me. Tbh, potential of this game is beyond Run the Marathon and far beyond Warp the Worlds, but it was ruined. Unfortunately

This game starts with a lot of stages which are really solid, good mechanics, well designed, occasional funny moments such as the traps in SMB3 and of course the Classic reference in Bit Trip Runner. However the final 2/3rds of my playtime were spent with content I just did not enjoy. The Metroid stage is very very lengthy, which isn't too bad, but the issue is it kinda just feels like diet metroid to me without a lot of fangame charm which makes the other areas feel distinct enough from the games they are based on. Because of this, I feel like I'd rather just play the real deal, I feeling I never got from the other marathon games. The lack of save points was also infuriating, as every death would set you back a considerable amount, which felt like a massive waste of time considering it's just redoing like 10 rooms again to get back to the part you messed up. I also hated the final boss, it was a massive difficulty spike (I definitely found it harder than other people did) and I just found it to have a lot of annoying attacks. I don't want to give this game such a low rating, but when I didn't enjoy nearly 70% of my playtime, I can not in good faith say this is a game I enjoyed. Play up to metroid and then go from there.

Compared to the previous marathon games, this one feels like a bit less of a tight package, largely due to the uneven lengths of the stages (not just the Metroid area) which makes some stages feel underutilized while others wear out their welcome just a bit. That being said, the highs are higher than ever before, and it goes out on a hell of a bang with the last few bosses, so it's still an absolute must play.
