The game itself is fine, most of the needle is fun to play through, and the overall atmosphere of the game is really cool. The leaderboards are also a nice way to make the game more replayable, but the timing system is very weird.

Old theory if you want to see it for whatever reason What I think happens is that starting a new game does not restart your timer. So if you for whatever reason reset the game after a certain amount of time, and on the next run you finish the game in 25 minutes, the time from the previous saves will be added onto your leaderboard time.

I think this because my in game time when I cleared was 18 minutes and 20 seconds, but on the leaderboards it said I got a 23 minute run for some reason, and I did have a few resets near the beginning. This also happened with Ushio who had 15 minutes in game when he cleared, but 20 minutes on the leaderboard.

What actually happens is that the leaderboard timer is in real time, while the ingame time only runs when your alive, like it is in the yutuu engine. I'm not sure why its designed like this, but thats whats happening if you were wondering.

I submitted a needle screen for this collab and it got rejected, then I rushed another one in like 5 minutes and that one got in; ever since then I pretty much think all criticism on needle makes no sense.

However, to imply that normal needle like this doesn't still get some smooth movements, just because I don't understand how it happens, would be dishonest. Most of the screens in this game play smooth, including mine somehow.

It's an alright game. Nothing super interesting, but the design was pretty decent. The leaderboard, while nice, doesn't really add that much except perhaps to encourage replaying to get a faster time. Of course, like all needle games, I would prefer it to be longer and with more than just jtool maps, but if that's what people want to make I can't stop them. And like I said, at least the needle is relatively fun.

As one might expect from a game with so many creators making one floor each, Competitive Tower Climbing is a huge mixed bag. There are a lot of good floors in here, but they're dragged down by some unpleasant ones, with a few really annoying jumps mixed in. The game shines at the end, the screens that break out of the tower are cool visually, and feature some creative layouts.

The biggest detractor from the game is the difficulty balance. I found myself on multiple occasions taking several minutes on a screen only to beat the next in a few tries. Even within screens a lot of saves feel wildly different in terms of difficulty. I think a large balance pass and reordering of screens would've helped this game a lot.

Overall, a decent game that I would recommend, but it certainly has it's low points.
