A really great adventure game that I both really enjoyed and had some major misgivings about. Overall, its still an amazing game with a ton of content, bonuses, production et al.

It starts off great, and the production is beautiful straight of the gate. Has a nice implementation of some visual effects and the options to toggle them if you don't enjoy them, and definitely makes the most of them throughout the game. Audio is great as well, with plenty of fitting tracks and some cool audio features, utilizing proximity sfx in many places to accentuate certain objects. All in all, the production is fantastic throughout.

Platforming wise, this will serve as the bulk of the game for most, as I'd say it also poses the larger difficulty barriers present as well. It features some mild metroidvania style platforming, featuring some powerups that you acquire along the way - though its minor as the actual gameflow is predominantly linear. Every stage (and there's many of them) has an identity, their own mechanics, excellently executed atmosphere that fits the time and location well. There is, however, a few issues here - the difficulty ends up coming from unpleasant control schemes rather than the mechanics or interactions themselves, and this definitely hurt my interest to continue at times. If that's a concern for you, be wary, though there's still a huge amount of gameplay prior to that point to enjoy. The parasol in particular introduced a problem - not only was it immediately tied in with rampant item swapping, it was very unpleasant to execute as you'd have to repress the button constantly and it unintuitively killed your upward momentum immediately. In general, my largest complaint was the later it went, there was just a lot of holding down buttons and button presses that felt like they could've been presented better with a different control scheme. The one-off segments that abounded though were often the highlights, with some real zany stuff along the way.

Boss wise, they felt generally easier than the platforming and too had some really solid ideas. A fair few of the bosses did feel a bit similar at times, but were always a fun change of pace. The balance could be really wacky sometimes, with almost every boss having some distinctly easier attacks, but I rarely mind that. The real drawback of the bosses is the wildly disparate amount of damage you can get depending on the attacks, to the extent that there were a few bosses where you'd be best served by resetting and rolling for specific attacks - a type of design I really dislike.

Overall, its an amazing game for the vast majority of it. There are parts that I wish were different, for sure, but even had they been dealbreakers, the game is expansive enough that there's a ton of value no matter what. If you're the kind of person who struggles with multitasking and insists on completing games, you may want to be wary, but otherwise if you're an adventure game player just looking to play a game while you like it, you'll get a lot out of this.

I think there is an occasional hiccup in save balance and awkwardness in controlling some of mechanics, but nonetheless the pure charm and amazing overall experience that this game gives makes it impossible for me not to love it. Was absolutely delighted and surprised to see this finished after all these years and it most certainly did not disappoint. Highly recommended.

Really fun and long oldschool adventure game. Has a lot of charm and the visuals are amazing the entire way through. Platforming stays mostly fresh with a bunch of new gimmicks being introduced all the time.

The parasol gimmick, while cool, was incredibly uncomfortable to play with, especially when you had to cycle through them!

Appreciate the updates, they help a lot.

Amazing game, I'm still astonished from seeing it being finished in development.
My expections for it's difficulty were a trainwreck though.. but it was also fun to see myself make progress at the last few worlds.

The gameplay is alright, there are also some collection elements and hidden elements, the style of painting is ok, the special effects are relatively cool, and there is a certain interest.

After 31 hours, I finally cleared this level. The hooks here really need to be improved. Sometimes I only press the "up" button and it will be recognized that the "left (right)" button is pressed, which really makes me operate very well. Suffering is what hurts me. There are indeed some imbalances in the difficulty. The hard places can really make me stuck for 0.5 to 2 hours, and the easy places basically pass without dying. Whether it's a level or a boss, sometimes changing the button will make you feel better. Overall, the quality is good, except for the operation setting of the hook.
