Fangame Marathon, yearly marathon by iwbtg fangames community, where people run fangames of different kinds. The thing most people look forward to is, ofcourse, blind events. Today we will be taking a brief look at evolution of blind iwbtg adventure games, from 2016 to 2022, and how did we get here.
The year is 2016, just a year after first Fangame Marathon and what the community calls "The golden age of fangames". This was the first year when the blind adventure race happened. The game is called run the marathon. The non-iwbtg stages are as follows: mario, mega man, golf, sonic, V6, and pokemon. The most mindblowing out of them all are, ofcourse, golf and pokemon. Remember this sentence structure, because it will reoccur for most of other games, since the creator team always tried to one-up themselves every year, which is the thing I'm trying to prove. As far as the game itself goes, it quickly became a classic and the most watched run on FM, even Markiplier played it.
Moving on to the next year. The game is called warp the worlds. Let's just cut to the chase and get mindblown: DOOM stage. 2018 hits, new blind race game, find a cure. The stage of this game is metroid, which is literally as long as the rest of the game. This year in particular also was the first and the last one to feature runners from different countries. We get to the 2019 game, stop the simulation, and you guessed it - they improved yet again. This time it's a binding of isaac stage, insane.
Sadly, 2019 was the last year where the game was made by the same team. But the years passed, 2020 had no blind race, 2021 saw a major dip in quality and never released. But then a new team in 2022 came...
And we get to the main topic - Wannafest. Just to be clear, I don't think that wannafest is a bad game, but I don't think that it's good either. There are various reasons to that, but I think that the biggest one has to be the campaign around this game. It tries to pose itself as a sequel to original iwbtg, a game from 2007 by a completely different author. It got a ping for every announcement channel imagineable, they try to get the game on bigger marathons, half of the community really tries to push the game to anybody, it won almost every award imagineable on the community's fangame awards show (what a shocker). It really feels like the game seeks attention everywhere imagineable, as much as possible, and tries to become new kamilia 3 or boshy kind of deal, but ultimately will never get even 1% of that fame. There were cases when some fangames were getting shoutouts, but it never was this big and noticable even after many years. This is unprecedented.
With that out of the way, what about the product itself? Original guy and previous marathon games, as shown, had something unique about them, but did this game? No. The stages look close to their source material. So close in fact, that every stage feels like just a reskin of main character, while previous games at least tried to throw in some fangame themed bosses and easter eggs. And no, editing text in parapa stage doesn't count as fangame reference, and probably makes the experience more cringey to people who don't know what a fangame is, people the hype around the game tries to catch. But wait, there's more - we have to talk about monkey ball stage. This is the most disappointing part of the game to me, the reason for that is really simple - monkey ball is a 3D game, the creators proved they can handle 3D work, why the hell the game's stage has 2D controls? This was probably the biggest lifeline the game had, and it was thrown out of the window. Lastly, if you thought unoriginality (and somewhat laziness for monkeyball) was the only bad trait the game had, you're wrong. Introducing error screens encountered upon release (fixed) and lack of camera settings, so you just end up blindly falling in pits and suffer through unsightreadable sonic chase, just some examples. Even though you get the normal fangame camera on the final stage, I guess having this as an option for the rest 90% of the game was just too original. But ofcourse we're including achievements because K3! And brutal mode because boshy rage mode! Surely that's how they became iconic! Riiiiight?
In conclusion, wannafest is a game which puts all of it's effort into being known noisemaker, and nothing else matters to it. Originality is too much of a job and kills the hype anyways. Ngl this game feels like it has that one "greatest pacman and donkey kong player of all time" energy.
