For: I don't wanna torture again
I've played a few trap games now and I had lots of fun with them, but I thought to myself "these trap games are so fun, why can't there be a trap game that breaks my heart instead?"
This is that game. It's a short and sweet two-screen trap game modeled after difficulty selection/warp screens.
The first screen has a warp named "114514", likely after Try 114514 Needles, and your goal is to avoid that warp. If you go inside it, you're treated to a screen of linear gates, with a short, neverending audio of a woman laughing, and no way to escape. I tried, one warp is broken and the other leads you back to the beginning of said screen. You quickly figure out you're not supposed to be there. Knowing this, there are warp traps alongside regular spike traps that we have to go through to reach the top, where there's an array of warps to choose from that don't seem like traps at first glance. It's the Dishonest one. The other two lead to 114514.
There's a tight trap in the d-jump refresher shaft but apart from that, it's an enjoyable sequence.
The second screen foregoes this warp for a new one: "wtfwtf" (or "DEAD") which you *can* escape from. It will also get into your nerves, but at least it only wastes your time instead of softlocking you. The traps are fun to maneuver around once again, and there are some time-based traps that are also tight, but fun nonetheless.
The part that broke my heart was the lead-up to a nameless warp that you activate a trigger for. A "DEAD" warp even flies toward you as soon as you're about to touch it, but the warp itself turns out to be one of them. The true warp is the "DEAD?" one.
Quite fun for its limitations, but there are a few problems. Mainly, it's the first screen. The trap warp is funny, but the fact that you can't leave it makes you have to quit the game and overwrite your save. It'll take you a while to figure the screen out, and you'll have to start over a whole bunch of times in that process. If you don't like that, that's understandable. It does get irritating.
The other problem is the engine. Not that there's anything wrong with the Nikaple edition, I personally don't know what's wrong with it, but it's also an Online engine? And I never tried it, but it does net me some performance issues that make certain jumps harder.
All in all, it's a good concept for how simple it is if you can look past the weird execution. I recommend it because it made me laugh, and that's really all I ask from a trap game.
