Eh... It's pretty much Kamilia 2, but updated in a new engine, and with a lot of glitches being fixed. Since this was made from the ground up, I had hoped that the changes would have been a lot more noticeable. Kamilia 2 is really hit or miss, because some parts of it is really fun and enjoyable, but it has a lot of complete bs level design and boss design, that makes you wanna scream.

I'm stuck at Geezer which is still painfully irritating to beat, due to the long introduction and punishing design. The game still looks visually hideous aside from some bosses and the menu screen. It still lacks a lot of polish and each screen still vary in difficulty. Traps are still uninteresting and dickish, if you are going to include traps, then please do something other than making a spike fly in a certain direction or removing the floor. It's been done to death, and this would be the chance to improve on that.

But I have to commend the remake team on managing to remake the game from the ground up, I was just hoping that you would have done some more nerfs to bosses and made the game more accessible and fun to play. This was a disappointment, but it is better than the original, so it has that going for it.

Lacking is the best way to describe this.
This game is frustrating because of what it didn't do. I'm at Geezer and just don't feel like continuing because so far this game has changed basically nothing. There are so many questions I have. Why is the difficulty still so bumpy, why does the best guy screen still have a blind drop, why does the skyclad screen still have the obscure block, why is CQ so long, why does Influka have more health, I get you don't want to skip pochi but there is an achievement for not shooting which iirc is lasting like 10 more seconds than you would if you just were shooting her. This doesn't feel like a remake, which is a bad feeling when thats the fucking point.

While I think that the remake itself is a spectacular port, I am not really a fan of the actual level design of kamilia at all. A while back I decided to raise my k2 rating a little as I think I was slightly unfair with the game and wrote the review while I was really mad. The reason behind this is that I realized that stages 1-5 are still very fun to play through, which makes up a majority of the game, so therefore, the rating should be higher. That being said, I think that stages 6 and onwards become some of the worst design levels and bosses in video game history. Gone are the fun but challenging levels and high action yet (mostly) grounded bosses, replaced with horrible gimmicks, backtracks, cruel traps, and awful awful bosses such as destination, crimson, and big kid.

The true standout in the original game is the final boss which takes the crown as the worst boss I have ever played in my entire life. I spent 165 hours of my life on that boss and not a day goes by that I wish I could take that back. All in all, 256 hours were taken from me on my original playthrough, and to this day I despise this game, perhaps unfairly. I am not rating the final boss in this remake because at the time of this review, I have not seen the remade final boss, and the developer seems to agree with me that the final boss was a disaster, so it was entirely remade. Hopefully its a better boss.

The remake actually smooths over some of the issues that I had with stages 1-5 such as getting rid of 2 frames, and making some of the bosses slightly easier. Yet, as soon as we reach stage 6, the stage that needed nerfs the most, it seems like the developer forgot about nerfs and kept the same level design except for some very small sections. This means that boss rush still has 3 awful bosses! I played the game thinking that this part of the game would be nerfed, but I was obviously wrong.

That being said, the remake itself is fantastic. The game has been painstakingly recreated, and in some cases, enhanced. New features have been added, collectibles have been hidden, and a secret level and boss exist. I am conflicted. How do I rate a game that I enjoy up until the last third until it completely betrays me? Eventually, I decided to rate it based on the percentage of the game that I enjoyed. If I was to suggest playing the game, it would only be until you have beaten the 5th boss, as I see no value in the rest of the game, as it is too difficult for anybody but the most patient people to ever enjoy.
