I think I was slightly spoiled when I played Noesis. At the time when I played it I had an amazing time and loved it, but it also wasn't too long after my fangame journey continued after not really interacting with them for 4 years besides a few brief stints. I experienced Noesis with very fresh eyes, thinking it was super unique and well made but without the experience to know just how one of a kind it truly was. When I learned of this game's existence I was excited, and as the game missed the initial release date that excitement only built up more and more as I realized quickly how much I yearned for something like Noesis again. Excitement is dangerous, it creates expectations that can't always be met, but I couldn't help myself, and luckily for me, I was far from disappointed.

Odyssey is basically everything I hoped it would be. It's based on Noesis but does it's own thing with the foundation of intricate trigger needle with gimmicks and creates a brand new game out of it. Every save brings a new idea, a new way to move spikes around, a new trap to get you, a new puzzle to figure out, and each of them feels completely fresh, this format did not get old in Noesis and it certainly does not get old here. The game even throws in some curve balls with stuff that's not really in Noesis, such as stage 2 being focused on full-screen cycles, stage 6 using air ice, and stage 8 being centered on vines. All of this is very welcome and it's an experience where I went into every new save excited for what was gonna happen.

The game really shows it's brilliance in Stage 9, where we see reused room layouts with new triggers. I didn't fully appreciate this idea when I first saw it in Noesis, but it really is amazing to see how much versatility there is with trigger needle and how much you can do with it. All of this culminates in the final stage which was my favorite in the whole game. High difficulty platforming that calls back to every stage prior, it's such a satisfying way to wrap up the game's needle.

The bosses are very charming of course, that's part of what gives Noesis and by extension Odyssey it's identity. The lack of avoidances definitely makes the game progress a bit smoother, it's not necessarily a good or bad thing they are absent, it's just different. The final boss however is here in full force, a lengthy fight with some really unorthodox reading. I absolutely love the learning curve of this fight, it feels so scary but you get so good at the nuances of each attack and it gets super consistent, it's very tough but I think it's decently approachable for a boss of this difficulty. It's an amazing way to cap off the game and I'm very impressed with it.

I might be a little overly dramatic in writing this review, but fangames really do mean a lot to me. There's so many special games that do so many creative things, have so many great ideas, and execute them so well. It's a niche corner of gaming that has given me so much joy, but the nicheness of it means that if you find something you love, there might not always be a dozen other things just like it. This has led to me holding these unique games in such high regard, it's why I'm so attached to games like SAN and 69 in spite of their flaws, and it's something that made Noesis special. After years of reflecting on how good it was, I finally got to experience something like it again. Something that took what I loved about it and ran with it, making a game I look at just as or even more fondly. I felt lucky to even be shown such a thing could exist, and playing it to completion is the cherry on top. Thank you Ava.
