Charming game with some mildly interesting challenges in it, the whole thing is short enough to not overstay it's welcome and is nice for some simple fun. The final boss is pretty stupid though.

I first played Sunspike in 2020, when I was new to fangames. I don't recall what possessed me to do this, as I was horrible at avoidance and had no chance of beating it. A couple years ago, I put in a more serious attempt at grinding it, only to be completely walled at the hearts attack for several hours because I still sucked. Today, I finally went back and beat the game. This has always been my fangame white whale, I'm very happy I was finally able to clear it.
The needle is bad, alright. Not much more to say.
The avoidance is absolutely the meat of the game, and I found it decently enjoyable, although certainly a mixed bag. There is a lot of parts that are really slow and easy, notably the beginning and the bit after the first chorus. These mostly just serve to pad the timer, and will rarely kill you, making them quite frustrating. The other big issue with the fight is the hearts attack, which is hard to learn and can completely RNG screw you pretty frequently. Other than that though, the attacks are quite fun, with nice visuals and a banger song. The sphere is probably a bit too learny for being at the end of the fight, but frankly it's such a banger of an attack that I don't care.
Overall, would I recommend Sunspike? Ehhhh, probably not. At least, there's a whole lot of games before it on the list. That being said, it's a historically important game, and I do think the avoidance has enough merit that it's worth playing eventually. I'm just glad that this is no longer hanging over my head.

The level design in this game is lacking to put it simply, the platforming is substance-less and very boring and the bosses are similar, uninteresting attacks and just not engaging at all. It's charming and cute at times but I just was not interested at all throughout my playthrough and have already forgotten most of it.
