Novelty is a pretty classic adventure game, featuring 8 main stages (and a final) each with some minor gimmick and a boss. Unfortunately, it's not a game that holds up the best, ending up feeling really awkward and uninspired.
A lot of the stages boil down to just needle, and these are definitely the weakest. The needle design is very outdated, with a lot of jumps that are a bit awkward, particularly in the infinite jump stage, and the screen wrap stage, which has some jumps that are really out of place in difficulty.
Another sore spot is the traps, which are often in annoying places. The worst offenders are the second stage, which is pure pick a path guesswork and thus extremely annoying to play, and the seventh, which adds traps at the end of slow autoscroller sections.
Of course, the game is not all bad. The black and white gimmick is awesome, definitely the most fun stage for me. In addition, the bosses are pretty decent, if a bit boring and unoriginal.
Overall, this game is an alright one to play, but I wouldn't really recommend it unless you have nothing else to play. I think the second game in this series does a lot of the same ideas much better, so I would recommend playing that one over this.

Honestly, playing Novelty II before this one makes this one look really underwhelming and not as fun in the process. Still a very good starting point, and without this we wouldn't have Novelty II.

When I reviewed the 2nd game I said I felt "extremely neutral" towards it, and I feel the exact same way about the sequel. There's some "novel" gimmicks for sure, but the execution could not be more bland to me, nothing stands out because the level design is just not there to let any of these gimmicks shine in the slightest. This leaves the game feeling empty or devoid of anything substantial, and is massively disappointing. My favorite part was the music in the white and black stage because that's a really good final fantasy song.

The other reviews explain this game pretty well so let me just put down my highlights.
Likes: Tom & Jerry boss was one of my favorites in the game, brought a very interesting take on the Always-Right gimmick. The screen wrap platforming section was pretty fun, hope to see more of that in future fangames I play. The Black and White area was also enjoyable, the boss especially. Finally, the avoidance in the flying ship area was fun.
Dislikes: The whole trigger area was more of a "try and repeat" deal that became immediately annoying, I wish there was more to the gimmick than just that. The ship autoscrolling segment was pretty obnoxious, especially the ding! blocks that just made everything worse, alongside the hitbox of the ship not extending the full length. Stage 8's robotman thing was also pretty annoying to fight giving the 16px blocks you have to stay on. The final stage was also pretty disappointing, just some regular needle stuff with a boss that has no semblance of the other stages.

Fantastic adventure game with a nice amount of length without anything overstaying it's welcome. The bosses are well designed, but are not overly difficult. All of the gimmicks are pretty fun and are never around so long that you get tired of them. A must play game for any novice player.
