A fantastic non-linear adventure game that actually looks and plays like a true fangame. The production value is top tier, and you can see the references and influences of various other games sprinkled all over the game and its bosses. As the name implies, expect trolls and traps, but not an overbearing amount of them, and presented in a creative enough way to always feel interesting and funny at times.

The game features a bunch of island stages that can be tackled in any order, and each contains an optional path that gives a reward that pays off in the final stage. Each island has it's own mini fast-travel system to make backtracking effortless. The various rooms keep offering fresh ideas and gimmicks so that platforming never feels dull, and the bosses are pretty fair, many of which offer tells on attacks with instagib potential. The final boss is a bit tougher than the others, as it should be, but still remains a fairly balanced fight especially if you have the reward for clearing the extra paths.

This game reminds us of what fangames could and should look like and gives a compelling reason to want to play fangames in a meta of soulless needle games.

Definitely a good game. Insane production values on bosses and there's constant variety to the platforming which makes it impossible to get bored. The fact some gimmicks are introduced for just one or two saves is a real testament to the sheer variety on display in this game. The good far outweighs the bad, but I think the bad is worth noting.

-Some screens are so heavily cycle based that you just repeat the save mindlessly until you memorize the exact order of moves to make to eave through a bullet hell, which isn't very engaging. The save where bullets go up and then sway horizontally as they come down is an example of this.
-Each boss has a strict pattern it follows, doing each move in a particular order that never changes. I find this to be very boring in pretty much any game. You'll play through the first move of each boss way way more than the last move, which I think is a downgrade from Overlord, where at the very least you'd experience each move a roughly equivalent amount of times for most bosses.
-The RNG of the moves themselves in some bosses could be handled better. One boss shoots a wave up or down randomly, and one time he shot an up shot 10 times in a row, meaning I was just sitting there. It looks pretty unprofessional and feels bad to play (especially if it's down 10 times in a row, which also happened to me).
-The final boss can only be hurt in its first phase by jumping. While fighting him, I ended up jumping constantly for almost twenty minutes straight to keep hurting him, which soon started hurting my thumb instead. The boss would only be improved by making the crystals damageable from the ground, because as it stands, the main thing that's hard about him is beating him before your thumb hurts too much to fight him.

Anyway, Troll King is a good game and fun throughout, with some hiccups here and there. It gets a strong recommendation from me, as long as you don't mind some mediocre boss design and potentially dropping it on the final boss due to thumb pain.

MattinJ seems to be the synonym of "a new favorite for you, Edgar". A non-linear experience for the most part with a nicey reward system in order to make progress an easier task, a main map as a hub composed of 5 main areas Reveal Spoiler, each representing a reasonably long and challenging stage, and an optimized backtracking system to add a quicker pace to what is, ultimately, an action/adventure fangame. Bosses are amazing and MattinJ combines, once again, platforming with quality production value in equal measures.

That is, except, that this is a trap game. I was warned, of course, but the opening stage is (intentionally[?]) terrible, and traps don't stop being frustrating. It has never been my genre. However, I greatly applaud the progression of the game because it is not entirely built of traps, and when you have advanced pretty much through a lengthy save, it won't pull out the awful card of a trap near the ending. Also, half of the game isn't trap based. The bosses surprised me in this matter, because they are not grindy like a Find My Destiny would do so against your patience, and they all look great, so extra points for that. Still, when you come back to the initial area once again, you know, the one infested with traps, the way to advance were so goddamn and stupidly cryptic that I had to search in the Internet how to get past them (I still don't understand how the triggers work in the last save of "Where Everything Began").

Overlord stays in my heart as his grandiose game, and it keeps growing in my heart the more I reflect on it, but this is a great adventure fangame, slightly below Reach the Moon's quality, and deserves all accolades from the community.

Now, when are you going to charge for your fangames, MattinJ? Give this guy a studio contract!

An other amazing, and my second game, from MattinJ. Troll king is like it name suggests a troll adventure game with, like overlord, an insane production value. All bosses are great and the game isn't really hard (expect the final boss but if you have all the secret items, it becomes really easier)
But I feel this game could have been better:
-I know it can be weird to say that, but for me it shouldn't have been a troll game because most of the traps are just decent and don't match very well with the epic adventure the game offers.
-It's a detail but I wish the big spike was better used, and not being just a troll.
-A problem that many fangames are dealing with is that they are compared to another but in the worse way, and I felt while playing that this game is like overlord but a bit worse. It's not a problem for the game itself but it affects my feeling toward it.

Overall, the game is really great but I was kinda disappointed.
What a strange feeling

MattinJ delivers another wonderful game to show us that there might still be hope in the world.

There are five main areas in this game with a boss in each world. Each area offers something different and a new atmosphere with fantastic visuals. Despite the title, there isn't a disproportional number of traps in the game and they never took away from the experience unlike the traps in some other well known adventure games. It's just a really well made adventure game with very few flaws in my eyes. I wholeheartedly recommend it.

A grand adventure of a game. Shares some gameplay similarities with MattinJ's other game 'I wanna be the Overlord' but has a much more light hearted vibe and bright style to it.

The story here is simply but nicely executed on. You live in a world that has been made dangerous by a "troll king" who has filled the world with various traps and trolls. Your job, of course, it to go kill him. Each of the world's has a distinctive and enjoyable aesthetic. Secrets are also peppered throughout, which can give important advantages for the final boss. I love the framing/rug-pull at the beginning, which fools you into thinking you've got a very different experience coming for you than you actually are. Trap/troll games have become less popular over the years, so it's always a pleasure to see high quality ones like this get released.

What really stands out, however is the bosses. Although not too difficult, the design of them is actually astounding. The Water Dragon in particular makes great use of a 2.5D aesthetic which can be a bit tricky to get used to but looks incredible. Every single one of them is pleasing to the eye and has a suitably epic soundtrack to boot.

A technically perfect game from a balancing and production level POV, my only critique would be it lacks a certain degree of length and epic-ness to justify a higher score. Still, this is an absolute gem and a must play.

One of the most fun fangames I've ever played, while there is a heavy troll/trap-heavy theme going on, this is primarily an open adventure experience where you can do the stages in basically any order, there's a lot of great references and funny traps but that alone wouldn't make the game as good as it is. When you really get down to it, the gameplay is just fun. Great platforming ideas with each world having an underlying theme which ties everything together, and even a little stage rush towards the end to throw more interesting gimmicks without needing a whole stage for them. This makes the experience feel varied and each stage is capped off with a great boss. The final boss is a bit tricky but you can go out of you way within the first four stages to get collectibles to make the boss easier, which was a pretty neat reward. Overall a fantastic fangame and definitely recommended regardless of your skill level!
