Based on IWT version. A quirky adventure into the depths, nuclear physicist comes out swinging and keeps you guessing.

It creates a hell of an atmosphere, toeing the line between your expectations of the environment its creating and the dash of absurdity it never fails to inject in every step. Was a big fan of this as it really solidifies a feel that you are in this twisted place, as an alternative to the simplistic abstract aesthetics that dominate most fangames.

Nuclear physicist is single extended stage with many parts followed by a boss (atleast of IWT, there's indication that this may evolve either in the future, unsure if it'd be under this project or merged into another - curious to find out either way). The boss is fun, albeit a bit confusing at first, but if you're a fan of bosses that challenge you with creative mechanics rather than simply dodging bullets, this is one worth checking out.

The platforming is varied, but it didn't always hit for me. Thematically great with a nice sense of progression as new mechanics and interactions get added, and every save had a distinct identity which never felt repetitive, keeping it mostly enjoyable. However, a major part of it I wasn't a fan of as rather than enhancing existing tools for the player, it precluded them and frequently that resulted in just rapid fire changing of control schemes rather than it supplementing the standard mechanics. This combined with a substantial difficulty spike made for a few bumps along the way.

Overall though, it was a fun and unique experience, and in the ever growing roster of 10000+ fangames, it found its way to stand out and that cannot be understated. I'd recommend this if you like the crazy side of fangames and want something with some difficulty.

synthas, as always, proving he has one of the most creative minds in the fangame community. aesthetically this game is off the charts. such a weird but exciting blend and clash of visual styles; some chunkier pixel art for the tiles, abstract data mosh pits for the backgrounds, all blended together with some IRL photography to make for a really unique style that i haven't seen much, if at all, with previous fangames. the music compliments this perfectly making for an uneasygoing journey into the depths of chernobyl.

in this self-proclaimed "post-sudoku" game, you navigate a radiated ukraine with the "objective" (?) of "disarming a nuclear meltdown" (???). you have some fun and quirky mechanics to interface with along the way, such as fruit that combust into more fruit upon being shot, radioactive blocks that explode into toxic waste dust for a couple of seconds after a detonation timer, and an AK-47 which propels you in the direction opposite to that which you are facing.

the first half sees the player getting familiarised with the environmental mechanics like the radioactive bombs, moving fruit, springs, the cetera. then the second half introduces vision-obscuring pipes and the AK-47, and generally has more of a focus on smooth strings of movements to navigate the floors, often in a timely manner (we are trying to disable the nuclear reactor, after all!) this usually works wonderfully, but there are some parts i found to be a little rough around the edges in the form of too precise for its own good.

the boss is wacky, but i am not a boss player in any capacity so i had to tap out there.

i really like this game aesthetically, and the gameplay is generally quite good too. i do hope to see some parts ironed out a little bit to feel less stiff/precise. i really appreciate the small touches such as a Geiger counter ticking erratically when you're close to a vein of plutonium in the wall.

...but also how does this game not have an options menu? :( i had to use a script to play fullscreen (i can't see otherwise)

regardless of the rough edges, this is a great game. i'd highly recommend checking it out :)

Hyper unique!
I loved every moment in it, the platforming is some fucking smart shit and the boss is in my Top 3 of fangame bosses now. I wish there were more bosses with creative concepts like this. Can't wait for the full game!

One last thing I gotta mention:

I don't usually like replaying fangames at all. It makes me frustrated that I take so long to beat something again when I was able to do it before (even if it takes less time) but Synthas somehow managed to make replaying really fun for me.

Once you beat a save you will have built up a lot of consistency to be able to rebeat it quite easily, it's not really designed around precision. The hard part is mostly just learning the saves and how to do them.

I still find the process of learning the saves a lot more fun but replaying it is still sick because you are just suddenly awesome at the game out of nowhere.

NUCLEAR PHYSICIST is a really interesting gimmick needle game. The highlight of the game is definitely the visuals, with strange colors and distortions that increase as you descend. This really creates the feeling of delving into an irradiated reactor, making the game feel super special atmospherically. The platforming is really fun, using gimmicks really well. There are a number of short dodging sections mixed in, which is something I love seeing in platforming. The longer saves towards the end are really cool, introducing some fun movements.

The game culminates with a neat boss, where half the battle is figuring out what everything means and what you need to do. In terms of gameplay it's good but not great, however the discovery aspect adds a lot. Ultimately, a good cap for the game.

Overall, an easy recommendation for fans of gimmick-needleventure, particularly those who like cool visuals.
