Rating based on hard mode, which is the recommended difficulty.
While better than the first iteration, this remake still lacks engaging level design that builds on the original IWBTG's. Don't get me wrong, there is actual new level design in this and there are some admittedly kinda creative differences here and there, but a lot of the new areas look like they were made by a kid in Mario Maker, with objects haphazardly strewn everywhere in a mess. The bosses are a mixed bag, some are harder, but are also easier to compensate for being harder. Mike Tyson takes less damage before getting out of stun but you no longer have to worry about blocks being removed thanks to water being below them and caution tape vines allowing you quick getaways, Mother Brain has more barriers but you get autofire to deal with it. Kraidgief is awful, as basically all that was changed is he now has way too much HP and his fight lasts forever. The rest are basically the same but with attacks buffed. The part in The Guy fight phase 1 where you bounce bullets back at him has buffed Hp which is the only change to that part, making it really annoying to re-beat that phase every time you die to phase 2.
I honestly do like seeing people use IWBTG Remastered's open source gmk to make mods, but I will say that if you're going to make a "hard mode" mod I expect it to be more than just placing more obstacles down and tweaking some boss stats. There are admittedly some parts that get close to meeting that here, but overall I can't really recommend this as a serious attempt at a "harder IWBTG".
