To start, the needle is kinda nothing, it's very easy "precision" needle which barely impacts my thoughts on the game, the real meat is the avoidance.
The avoidance is honestly really cool, for one there's a lot of novel attack ideas which are really creative and fun to learn and dodge, the ones that stand out are the infamous patterns with four big bouncing cherries, the attack during the first chorus, the insane curving attack before chorus 2, and the chaotic outro. That's not to say these parts are without flaws, for one learning some of this without a video is a nightmare, and the RNG in some parts is pretty bad, but in ways that I often found amusing and was able to laugh at rather than get annoyed by. I do have gripes, the intro is not great, LoveTrap bouncing before every attempt is never that fun, and the attack where you shoot the cherry bouncing on the floor is really annoying to die to, but besides that I had a pretty good time. This avoidance definitely isn't for everyone, but it has serious merits to it and I think it's maybe worth trying.

iirc i made this for a fangame i was gonna make that i ended up not making (although it did evolve into Oblique Torment 1)
so now it's just a gms2 port of tijit engine 1 that nobody is ever gonna use
making it did teach me how engines work so not all effort is wasted
2025 edit: apparently the collision broke at some point. i fixed it by copy and pasting yoyoyo gms2.3's block collision code so do that i guess

This review is based on a 100% clear
Tempest is a game which is sort of all over the place, and that might be one of the main appeals of it honestly. The stages are relatively standard, it's mostly just old-school trap stuff but there's a few things to spice it up, particularly in the secrets. The traps are okay, there's definitely games with far more annoying ones but the game largely relies on flying spike traps which aren't even particularly interesting, save for a few sprinkled throughout. The bosses are odd, the main ones that stand out are boss 2 which is pretty enjoyable to play despite being a little goofy, boss 4 which was the most fun thing in the game for me, it's basically just gambling for good RNG but there's a decent skill element and I liked it, and boss 5 which was awful, I hated it a lot and it was definitely the weakest part of the game for me. The ending is also rather anticlimactic, mostly just having some pretty simple platforming which isn't very noteworthy (unless being in K3 counts as noteworthy :P)
Tempest is a fine game, I lean towards disliking it but it's respectable for the things it tries to do and how unusual it is at times. There's definitely some appeal here but I wish it was executed better in a lot of places.
