A lightweight, Yuuutu-like engine for GameMaker: Studio. For the record, I playtested this.
The reason for this engine's creation, as I understand it, was to provide a light alternative for creating fangames on Studio. Previously the only popular choice was YoYoYo Engine, a bloated, buggy, undocumented and frankly ugly GMX. That may be fine for some people, but to me, the thought of wrangling YoYoYo engine yet again, fixing its core issues and removing all the bloat just to make it usable, has put me off starting a new project many times. I'm very glad to have this now.
In contrast to that, viri engine was created from scratch with reference to existing code, intended to feel more like GM8's Yuuutu. The difference is noticeable right off the bat - this is just nicer to play.
Development starts with just the basic features: the player object, saves, blocks (non-solid), standard player-killers, water, vines, gravity-flippers and conveyor blocks. Everything is made with clean, well-commented code and can be modified easily. There are no superfluous features like the title screen and ugly 3-way file selector which are default in YoYoYo Engine, so as a developer this engine feels much more like a blank canvas, which in my opinion is how it should feel.
If you're looking for an *even more* lightweight engine than this, I'd suggest Pat's engine which has even fewer features, most notably the lack of a saving system (though it still uses solids I believe.) But for anyone else I'll definitely recommend this engine and I'll obviously be using it myself from now on.
