This is my Shortventure 2018 contest entry. The theme was supposed to be about 'fear' but I screwed up and made it about cuisine and music. Sorry about that.

I never expected a song about a woman killing a baby to be a true banger.

Under the Stairs is a fangame not quite like any other. It borders on experimental with the things you may experience and for the Shortventure 2018, it nailed the theme of 'Fear' above all other submissions. I opted to not put my judge review for this, as I feel the less information you have going into it the better. Do know however that it's an eerie adventure telling the tale of the whimsical hijinks of a wacky family and their surroundings.

Sort of what you'd expect from Wookie, although don't expect a typical platforming adventure here. No doubt this game will be quite divisive due to the somewhat slow and different nature of the game, but I was a fan.

Not a traditional fangame by any means, We Live Under The Stairs showcases options for fangames not seen in any other game. I must specifically compliment the game's way of inducing fear with environment and lore instead of relying on jumpscares and/or monsters. Both graphics and music fit the game perfectly, only exception being certain out of place sprites (Minecraft inventory screen ? Really ?) that work against the immersion in the story that the game attempts to create. Gameplay combines point and click games with a fangame in a way that feels very natural. The backtracking that is obviously needed in this type of game doesn't feel annoying as it never takes much time and if you read the text carefully you'll always know where to go and what to do. I recommend everyone to go through the house again after the ending to reveal additional details to do plot.

More games of this kind please.

Dysfunctional families make it to the world of fangames, and the themes are dark and eerie. The concept was "fear" and, although it does a decent job at it, it goes more for the tone of suspense. The thriller environment would work better, however, if it wasn't cryptic at times. The execution resembles those "click and use" PC games, so you play more a detective than someone walking through dark corridors to achieve your purpose. This form of gameplay doesn't suit my definition of "fear" at all; at least it didn't add much for me within the genre.

Also, I spent half an hour getting an item because it wasn't intuitive at all: the rope. This killed the mood for me quite a bit. I will admit I am dumb with detective games, but I found this particular find problematic, unlike the other ones, which gave you clues.

The record scene is one for the ages.

Also, be sure to keep playing for a while after the "ending". The extra stuff is quite disturbing and, hey... could a sequel be made out of this??

Pretty neat and provocative story mixed with the item management of adventure/point and click games. Kinda reminds me of Phantasmagoria in terms of its themes and item based exploration. Its good.
