Incredible avoidance game by Denferok, very short and fun in general with quite a bit of variety in its attacks. The visuals can sometimes make the game lag a little if you don't have a very good computer, but besides that it looks and plays amazing, the song was a great choice as well. Usually people disregard avoidance games given the nature of the genre but I highly recommmend this to anyone, it's without a doubt worth it.

As one would expect, if theres anything to count on Den for, it's eye pleasing visuals. It doesn't have much to do with the actual Gothic and Loneliness but that's fine.

But honestly, I found alot of the gameplay fell between annoying or boring and kind of lost interest a half an hour in, and felt I was just playing it just for the sake of finishing. The beginning is fine, if not a little subdued, and Den makes good use of all the arena changing and new space, but when the autoscroller segment starts happening it becomes a chore. The beginning of it functions as just a cycle where if you stop holding right you run the risk of clotheslining off one of the patterns. Do this too many times and with a little bit of awkward RNG at the end you might just get gimped by the left side orbs instead. It honestly feels like something closer to a segment in an adventure game over something in an avoidance.

There's some other nitpicks, such as the lightning fast transitions near the end being really jarring, and I personally found some of the visuals (the tunnel segment during the auto-scroller specifically) distracting, but the very ending is a cool and pretty involving segment.

So, honestly, in the end i'm not sure. It's definitely out of the sphere of normal avoidances and there's definitely some creativity, but the beginning feels tuned too soft to be really interesting and the middle is just a bunch of frustrating white noise. So it ends up as a mixed bag for me.

Looks visually stunning, might actually be one of the prettiest fangames out there. I like the idea with the changing space and most of the patterns are really fun to avoid.

I have some really big issues with the first autscrolling section that goes upwards. There's no room for any slowing down, which you can be forced into when a projectile is in the way. I also really don't like that every single jump you have to do there is a double jump. This ended up multiple times killing me because an unlucky projectile came in the way and I couldn't do anything as falling down or continuing up would result in my death.
Making it easier to climb the stairs in the beginning and just throwing more projectiles at you would have been the best solution in my opinion.
It really is a dealbreaker for me and I'm really demotivated to keep playing. Despite that, the game is really well made and that's why I'm giving this such a high score despite my frustrations. Maybe I'll come back to this and change the score when I actually manage to beat this.

Escape the Gothic Castle is a pretty game. The amount of work that went into polishing the visuals is truly remarkable, and without a doubt it is one of the flashy and unique looking avoidances out there. However I think in achieving that it really suffered from a readability stand-point. I personally found many of the effects and details such as the lighter bricks in the background, the trail effect during the Autoscroller, the blur/fade effect on the bullet sprites, and even the spotlight at times just created a layer of visual noise between me and the game. I felt I spent more effort and time trying to keep track of where The Kid is and the shape of the bullets then reading how to dodge them, which for an avoidance is really not that desirable.

If you have better eyes then me you'll probably enjoy the game a whole lot. Minus the one attack at the very end of the autoscroller I think the fight is very well designed, I just sadly couldn't get into it due to the reasons I stated above.
