A truly remarkable achievement of game development and a game changing moment for the fangame community.

On many levels this is a remarkable piece of software. The production value and functionality this brings to the table makes both playing and creating fangame content more accessible than ever before. A Steam release puts the fangame community on display in front of a much wider audience potentially opening the flood gates to bring newcomers into the tent, and the simplicity of using the program makes it so literally anyone can start creating rooms after only a few minutes of learning how to use the tools.

Just by playing the levels, I can't help but be consistently amazed at the scope of what this software is capable of when in the hands of creative people. Not only does the maker side of this software put a massive amount of gimmicks at the fingertips, but seeing the way makers are taking these tools and twisting them into new things pushes the limits. Nobody who wants to make fangame content is constrained by their lack of programming skills, knowledge of other game making software, or even their access to it. I Wanna Maker lays it all out there in an easily digestable package literally for free.

Even if you have no intention of ever creating a single piece of content, there is a pit of infinite gameplay here that gets deeper by the hours as a flurry of new rooms are constantly being pumped out. The game itself comes with a ton of functionality, even in early access, to let people enjoy exploring rooms in the way they want. Stats tracking clear counts, speed records for each room, and even the ability to make your own character gives users little things to make the game whatever they want it to be for themselves. This looks only to get better as more features and functionality gets added over time.

The version as it exists in early access right now is more than enough to cement itself as an essential experience for anyone who enjoys fangames and platformers in general. After a few short hours playing this, it's hard not to marvel at the massive potential sitting here and to be truly excited about watching the future development of this project.

Difficulty based on Campaign Mode.

I wanted to wait until the game came out of early access to leave a review so here we go.

I Wanna Maker is a work of art, a game in which you can notice at every moment the love, effort and enthusiasm that the developers invested in its creation. I will divide this review into 3 sections: Editor, online and campaign mode.

EDITOR:

The main core of the game. It contains a very wide range of objects with which to create more things than one can imagine, which is demonstrated with some levels created by some people. It may seem that it only serves to create 2D platformers, but it has been seen that you can even create 3D game simulations, so the level of customization that the editor has makes it, in my opinion, superior to other better-known games like Mario Maker.

ONLINE:

One of the most complex online systems offered by a fangame. The system contains a database of levels with multiple search options so that each person can find the levels that best suit their taste, including filters such as difficulty, genre, publication date, etc., in addition to having a simpler system of filters as the fact that it simply finds the most popular, most recent levels or those in which the most people are playing (a feature which is one of my favorites), regardless of any type of more advanced filter. But the online is not only in this database, it also has an integrated "I Wanna Play Online" through which you can see other people who are currently playing the same level as you, as well as have a chat text to chat with them.

CAMPAIGN:

The highlight of version 1.0 for me. At first I expected a fairly simple campaign mode that would serve more as something extra. Instead, I found a story mode that, if released as a standalone fangame, could very well be one of my favorite adventure fangames. It has basically everything I look for in a fangame: Outstanding visuals with beautiful world maps, considerable length (6 worlds with a good number of levels + a world 7 that serves as a conclusion), incredible soundtrack, immersive sound effects and a difficulty to beginners that I really like. Each level brings something new to the table, and together they serve as a great showcase of what you can do with the game editor. The level design throughout the story mode is excellent and it's a delight to run through the levels while trying to find the optional collectibles.

CONCLUSION:

This fangame has a level of polish like few others. I really hope this game eventually gets the popularity it deserves. For everything mentioned above, I can only say: Long live I Wanna Maker.

This game is probably the proudest achievement of the fangame community, a massive passion project that brings fangames to a much wider audience. You can tell how much love the devteam poured into this game, with a huge collection of assets and an incredibly polished level editor, consistent updates, ongoing effort to keep the game interesting (weekly mix etc). And in classic fangame fashion despite its much larger scale, the game is free, even though the devs themselves put a lot of money into the game (custom music, server services, steam...). There really is no end to the praise I could pour out about every single aspect of IWM, but I think I will leave it at this.

With the wider reach the game does attract a lot of new people, mostly children, who do not know yet how to act or be a healthy member of the community, but we should be patient with them. We may have to deal with some of them demanding for their ideas to become a part of the game or begging constantly for people to play their levels, but i think with time they can understand how to act normal and turn into good community members. So give them a chance, a bigger fangame community in the end benefits us all.

Finally, a massive thank you to the dev team and the continious work they have been putting into this incredible gift to us. The dedication put into IWM is astounding, and deserves nothing but praise. <3
