The goal of this simple action game is to catch the moving clown
by clicking with your mouse on him. Whenever you succeed your
score it raised. But watch out, the clown will also move faster.
How high a score can you get?

Catch the Clown is a rather unique platforming-focused game with a fair mix of relatively simple but effective gimmicks, used in tandem with a charmingly presented premise to make for a pretty memorable game. It even ended up being one that I cared enough to beat it on all 3 difficulties (as the respective changes extend towards actual platforming and boss changes, rather than the typical save re-balancing).
The nature of each respective gimmick in unison almost makes some elements feel like you're playing a pattern avoidance in platforming form, which can really go either way depending on the design, but I think in this instance it felt very satisfying to come up with strategies for. This could then be refined even further on a higher difficulty playthrough. These challenges are often mixed up with different elements and even a couple of quirky twists and bosses along the way. There's even an extra boss which I found particularly fun, and I'd strongly recommend giving that a try as I found the attack design to be super enjoyable.
The game also jumps out at me for having a really unique mix of some charming oldschool-ish PC aesthetic designs, overlayed with some really polished and impressive visual flair to balance it somewhere between retro and extremely modern. The side shot of the car riding as the sunset shines behind it is a particular visual highlight for me.
Definitely worth a look if you want some platforming that might stray out of your comfort zone, whilst throwing you a couple of surprises along the way!

This is a very charming game with such a unique feel and style to it that you really can't help but smile when you play it (unless you're some kinda weirdo...)
I love the variety in the level themes, gimmicks, and gameplay. The game itself is relatively short but it still feels like a full package. There are some items you can collect along the way for an extra challenge but you don't need them to beat the game. And of course there's the driving segment, which is one of my favorite "time for something completely different" moments in recent fangame memory.
Also, for anyone out there who may have used the old versions of game maker, there's lots of references and easter eggs in here for you to enjoy. Most of the assets (I think) are borrowed from the stock library of game maker 1.0, which is a really fun idea for a game. There are also some genuinely impressive visual effects throughout the game that only enhanced the notion that I was playing something truly special.
Renex, you're one of a kind. I can't wait to see what else you have in store!

Catch the Clown is an incredible tech demo, and a decent game. I think it's worth noting that you should go into this like a tech demo, cause if you just pay attention to the gameplay the ratings on this might feel a point or two too high.
Catch the Clown is an homage to classic gamemaker tutorial games. I fiddled around with a lot of these as a child, and playing this unlocked memories that were nearly forgotten, making this quite a nostalgic experience for me. The game is mostly needle with traps, and some puzzly elements. None of that is super special, and if not for the cute sprites the needle would be quite generic. The game peaks with a cool driving section, reminiscent of about 10,000 Flash games. This section is really cool to see in a fangame, and left me with a big smile. The other highlight is the final boss, which ends with an awesome space shooter. However there are a few complaints, like the first phase being quite random, and the second phase lacking variety, with attacks lasting a long time. It's still a pretty fun boss, but the visuals and theme back up somewhat weaker gameplay.
The game really shines as a demonstration of Renex's work making GM8.2, Renex engine, and just general programming competence. There's 3d animation, reflective surfaces, and crazy animations galore. I really like the fiddling with the title bar that happens. With these things in mind, the game is much better, as the crazy feats of gamemaking make the quality of the gameplay almost irrelevant. Renex has quickly become the most prominent figure on the programming side of the community, and I look forward to seeing the other heights he reaches. (His next game already looks likely to top this 10x over, so this excitement is quite justified).
