For: I wanna sort myself out
Rating based on the content I cleared. (Honestly no idea if I cleared any of the extra. It's kind of confusing.)

Sort Myself Out is a "needleventure-ish" game with a few gimmicks thrown in. You arrive in a hub world with seemingly only one path to go, though this quickly changes.

Some paths are more cryptic than others. For example, one path features a switch you need to shoot to enter, while there is some extra content which, while not particularly hard to find, requires the player to press up three times, rather than once. This caused me to miss this content on my playthrough, despite finding the entry point.

The hub platforming is pretty creative and fun, with lots of nifty vstring tricks and other setups that make jumps easier than they first appear. However, this high level of quality isn't present in every area, at least according to my interests. For example, one stage features a bunch of quasi-apple aligns, which, while kind of interesting conceptually, made the platforming feel like a bunch of buffed 16-pixel gaps—which is exactly what it is. In general, jumps at the start of saves were more precise than they needed to be to create the movements they feature, which made for a meat-grinder effect at times.

There were a few issues with the game upon release that kind of worsened my experience, because I completed content and had to replay some of it both because of a softlock and because it was impossible to clear at first. Thankfully, these issues have been addressed, and the creator has since released a debug version, which I appreciate.

One screen features a neat shoot-to-jump gimmick, which I've grown rather fond of as I'm working on a game that uses a similar version. I would have liked to see this gimmick featured more prominently, perhaps with some other light gimmicks. The exit-to-refresh-double-jump gimmick was also pretty creative, though I was lukewarm on its implementation, which felt awkward to pull off in conjunction with vines.

Would I recommend this? Yes, but only to needle players who are okay with having to wander around a bit and having the difficulty be kind of all over the place. Just bear in mind that some stuff probably won't be to everyone's tastes.
