Catharsis is a pretty legendary game at this point. It is a progenitor of artistic fangames, while also being pretty influential in terms of pure needle design (a popular gimmick is named after it)! Compared to some modern needle, it could be considered quite rough around the edges, but given its age it holds up surprisingly well. The majority of the game is quite enjoyable, bouncing between more precision focused sections and longer saves. One of the interesting hallmarks of this game is for screens to have several possible paths. It enhances the experience quite a bit, adding some player agency by allowing you to choose what you want to do.
The highlight of the game is definitely the audiovisual experience. It is masterful, evoking emotion, creating vibes, and inspiring deeper thought in away very few fangames have managed even in the many years after Catharsis. The game is haunting and beautiful, and both times I've played it I've been left thinking about it for some time.
Overall, I consider this a must play game. While the gameplay gets a bit unpleasant at times (looking at the infamous platform room), it's still mostly really fun, and the artistic value of the game makes the gameplay take second seat anyways. This is one of the most thought-provoking experiences in fangames, and anyone with artistic inclinations should do themselves a favor and play it.
