OK-ish Rukito game. Nice visuals, mostly annoying gameplay. There are some interesting platforming ideas, but they aren't very well executed. The worst part is the last save from the red stage, that thing made me want to vomit.
The stage that saves the game is the Needle Tower at the end. I'm not sure if it's worth the effort (The game isn't oarticularly short), but it's quite a refreshing stage for people who are into needle games. Plenty of interesting jumps, challenging without being unfair at all. Three screens filled with fun. Then reality strikes back with the last boss.
The first boss was good, it's quite hard for those who don't know how to deal with him, but once you learn how to fight against him, it becomes quite easy. The last one, on the other hand, is a complete disaster. You have to dodge 3, or even 4, kinds of projectiles at the same time, while trying to damage that thing as quickly as possible, otherwise he'll heal himself and your efforts will be entirely wasted. But not too quickly, because the invulnerability frames are stackable. The concept is good, but the execution is horrible.
I don't know, the only part that was really worth it was the needle tower (With a few good saves scattered through the game to not make the thing unbearable), and it's a long way until you get there. Probably wouldn't recommend.

Coming from playing SSR2, this is quite the step down. I know this is older than SSR2, but I still did not enjoy it due to how bad the misses where. The traps where the worst offender as they were basically "Haha you died! Do the save again." than contributing to the Needle.
There is good stuff as I see that Rukito was more experimental with the gimmicks and I can see potential in them if he honed more on them.
This game made me appreciate SSR2 much more as my first Rukito game as I was initially considering GR to be my first. But in retrospect it was a bad choice as I felt if I played the latter first, I likely won't like Rukito's games and Design as much.

Given its age, I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the platforming of GR. I can definitely feel the rough spots when I play but it's genuinely an extremely forward-thinking needle game for its time and in some ways it still holds up to scrutiny today. The bosses are fucking bad and the final boss alone I think is a major contributing factor to the idea that Rukito can't actually make decent bosses. I don't believe this to be the case, especially for some of Rukito's other works, but it definitely is an accurate assessment here.
For me the final boss was still fun despite how bad I knew it was. I think if you don't take it too seriously and go in with the expectation that it will take a while to clear and may not be a perfect experience you can still have fun. It basically doesn't matter until the last couple hits of the fight when the final attack shows up, because its a lot to manage on top of everything else the boss throws at you. Would I recommend GR? I think with some caveats you could feasibly have a good time with it, but it does require you to approach it with a certain mindset that I think a lot of people don't have. Me personally though I think it was worth my time.
