(5/7/2021) No longer agree with my original review here. After the gimmick revolution of 2019 and being exposed to many more games from around the same time of Sunspike I've actually started to grow an appreciation for it and what it did for the fangame community. The sphere is absolutely iconic and the fight as a whole I feel really pushed the idea of making avoidances not just fun to play but a blast to watch.

Yeah perhaps the needle isn't the most creative or the boss could've been balanced better, but it is still fun to play. You can find enjoyment in less then perfect games, some of my favorite fangames in fact have some stuff I don't like (Kermit 2 has the 32px and Genki stages, Meteor Stream is filled with insta-gibs, Get Rekt has a lot of ehhhh or boring picks in stage 3, Fishing Temple is Fishing Temple, ect.) Frankly I feel my original review was just saying "hey! this game has issues!" without thinking about if these issues actually make the game unfun to play (which to me anyways, they don't).

Anways to get back on topic, Sunspike is a fun game. If you have the skill and don't mind some dated design I would definitely recommend it. There is fun to be had, and I feel that is all that matters when it comes to games.

Below is my original review.

This game is honestly really bad.

The Needle is really generic and uses a lot of named jumps, not that there is anything wrong with named jumps, you just gotta use them in interesting ways, which this game doesn't most of the time.

The Avoidance is pretty, and the music is Fantastic, but that is about all the good things i have to say about it. The fight itself is RNG heavy (although with some really annoying pattern), and not in a good way. You will often get walled and there is nothing you can do about it, especially in the second chorus. But that isn't the worst part of this boss, the worst part of it is the Sphere, which is a insanely learny attack at the very end of this RNG-Fest of a boss.

I don't get all the hype about this game

Believe it or not, this was my third fangame experience. I decided to postpone I Wanna Kill The Guy until it was finished and, after conquering everything to be done in Boshy, I said to myself: "Yeah, Sunspike looks like something I can handle."

Surprise, surprise! Welcome to everything that you never prepared yourself for because Delicious-Fruit.com was entirely unknown to you: the engine that rules almost all fangames, double-spike jumps, triple-spike jumps, gate jumps, diagonals of different heights, corner jumps, mini-spike jumps, F-jumps, allignment planning and jump-cancelling (not mandatory, but it helps a lot during Stages 5 and 6). Only 30 screens with an exponential difficulty curve and an amazing avoidance boss that I won't spoil featuring one of my favorite vocaloid songs: Six Trillion Years And Overnight Story by IA, a boss that is normally featured among the 50 most difficult avoindance bosses ever (at least for a 2015 ranking).

What was I thinking? Nothing, really! I wasn't thinking because I didn't know! Was my endlessly frustrating experience awarded with something? Well, thanks to the endurance preparation of never giving up that Kayin and Solgryn awarded me with, the answer is yes: not only the difficulty curve is exponential, but also the design's quality: you move on from funny screenshots to futuristic settings, great music choices (including a remix from Chrono Trigger) and my first experience with the infamous "sphere", which is certainly an entirely creative and innovative pattern attack.

I finally get to know this community, and it turned out to be a "Veteran" experience. The dozens of thousands of deaths made sense now, but the payoff is that most of the fangames that are between the 40-59 difficulty score range feel so light now.

So, I blame my ignorance of fangaming, but I also thank this game for making me discover my endurance limits and for preparing me so well for games that were "easier" and more popular.

On a sidenote, the platforming is not generic: it is well designed, and the save placement is well distributed. In a few words, the experience is very cool.

And yes, the final platforming screen is hell. It is no coincidence that it is featured in the second screen of Stage 4 Kamilia 3 (the first screen of Stage 4 of K3 is also the second most difficult screen in this game for me).

I still think this is one of the best needle games ever made. It just never gets boring, I have beaten the needle part so many times its hard to count. The avoidance is a hit or miss for me, got very close to the end multiple times but always choke. That is not to say it is bad, its actually very beautiful; its just very hard.

Amazing game, so exited for the sequel!

Wow, I haven't reviewed this yet? Huh.

I Wanna Sunspike is a relatively short game, consisting of 6 stages (unless you count both blue outline areas as one) and an avoidance boss, with every stage slowly amping up the difficulty. A beginner could definitely start this game, maybe make it to stage 3, but couldn't possibly beat the game without some previous fangame or precision platforming experience. Unless, you know, they're willing to grind for a few 10s of hours.

The visuals of the game start getting good in stage 4, with stage 6 being the best in the game (in my opinion).

Out of all the screens in the game, i only have a real problem with 2 of them, in which i will link here: http://imgur.com/a/dynvy - Those screens are arguably horrible, but for the rest of the platforming in the game, it's full of pretty generic needle jumps, but I find it very fun, to the point of speedrunning it. The difficulty curve is insane, as you will know once you've seen the first screen of the game, and then the last.

The music in this game is pretty good, I like just about every song and they all fit with their respective areas.

The avoidance boss is what really makes this game, being 3 minutes and 32 seconds long, it has a whole lot of production value. The song is absolutely AMAZING, and is probably my all-time favorite vocaloid song. Here's the link to it, btw: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zkHgpKcX5FY - The boss is fairly easy for veteran players and can be cleared within a short timespan of a few hours. This boss took me 16 hours, about half of which was when i was still bad at fangames, the other half being when i was slightly less shit. The final attack is definitely the hardest attack in the boss, and it is really really cool looking. Well, it was cooler before people started making better versions of it, but still.

Anyway, with all that being said, it is one of my favorite fangames, and i would 100% recommend a full playthrough. (Then beat yoyo's any% wr kthx)
