"It's a tough one to review, since no one really knows what happened or why." - Kurath, 2019.

Gobou is a unique experience, to say the least. It goes against what you might expect a typical fangame adventure to look and play like, and bombards it with some heavy plot twists, a charming cast of characters and a series of devilish and unimaginable challenges, even more vicious than the last.

If you want a fangame with combat, you'll find it here. If you want a story that defies language barriers and even mortal understanding, you'll also find that here. Most of all, if you want a memorable fangame experience, I can say with absolute certainty, that you will find it here, with GOBOU.

This game tells the tale of the Gobou Sword, a legendary burdock said to hold various mystical properties that have become the greatest desire of many. The hero is but a kid of normal nature, but when his village is raided by demons who believe the Burdock Sword may be found there he will discover his own strengths in order to bring peace to the realm. It's a grand story filled with various characters, exciting twists, and some of the most unique gameplay you'll ever find in a fangame. It's a story you'll never forget and is absolutely worth every minute of your time.

Right off the bat, not only is Gobou a stellar adventure game, it's one of the only fangames I believe is truly aiming for an "RPG" tag. The majority of the gameplay revolves around fighting enemies, you have different weapons you can toggle between that each has different uses and effects, you have stamina and a magic point system, you have special buffs and debuffs for yourself and enemies, and of course, you even have a skill tree you can respec at any time. This all together makes for a highly entertaining playthrough that makes it stand out from any other fangame that I've played. Now I will of course admit there are some off-putting segments here and there, but everything in the game makes up for those anyways.

Some additional points that make the game really cool are the boss fights and the storyline. Each boss feels like an action-packed battle in which you have multiple ways you can approach them due to the weapon system. Some of them do have some questionable attacks, but the majority of them are excellent bosses that make the game what it is. Now the storyline is something that's only told in Japanese, but using Google translate on my phone I was able to experience a rough translation of the game and really enjoyed the storyline told in the game. If you're going to play the game, I really recommend doing so as well since it will vastly increase your enjoyment knowing how everything fits into place.

Overall, Gobou is one of the best action-packed adventures out there on Delfruit, so I would highly recommend giving it a try if you're looking for a grand adventure.

An enjoyable game that mostly focuses on fighting monsters and bosses with different non-standard weapons and a later introduced skill system which allows respecing.
Platforming is kept to a minimum and is fairly easy.
While the grafics are mostly in a MS Paint style they go well with the overall theme of the game.

I'd estimate a first playthrough to be 3-6 hours depending on how long it takes to adjust to unusual combat and learning bosses although most are fair and some can potentially be first tried.

As for the skill tree: its in japanese so if you don't feel like testing around every single one you can use my general translation/description (not including dmg/ressource numbers).

Edit: the sword one (very last skill) can be used if you learn the 3 spear ones (hybrid dmg skills)

Addional info:

The spear guy with 10.000 HP that regens a lot is an avoidance which ends after the flame ground attack. While you can damage him you don't have to at all and can just focus on dodging.
It is NOT possible to kill him, he will always survive with 1 HP. Its a nice challenge to go for it though as it requires pretty much perfect damage at all times.

EXTRA boss: after the credits and 'Thank you for playing' screen you can go further to the right. To defeat this boss you will have to

use the 'Misc' sword skill or upward magic spell and eventually poison, everything else does single digit damage. After a couple of hours my final skills were:
- 'Misc' upward magic
- speed buff
- 'Hybrid' dodge roll
- Magic regen skill

GOBOU is one of the wildest fangames I have ever seen or played. The game has an entirely unique atmosphere, vibe, platforming, bosses, basically anything you'd expect out of a fangame is absent from GOBOU, and in it's place are a completely unique take on fangame gameplay, unlike really anything else I've played. The fundamental concept behind the game is a weapon system, which starts basic but evolves into a skill tree, where you can pick and choose the abilities that suit the particular section best. This is very rewarding to experiment and play around with, even if I did not do so much on my own playthrough. There are some grievances however, the game starts so basic that I found myself getting a bit bored at times, and the bosses, while there are some good ones, suffer from their own set of issues, mainly some being far too easy, and some being a little annoying. I can't say I disliked this game though, I think everyone should at least LOOK at it at some point. It's truly wild that it even exists, and I'm happy I played it.
