This game kind of defies descriptions by traditional fangame criteria. It ends up, largely, a bizarro side-scrolling action adventure game with some fangame elements. There's minimal regular platforming, instead tossing a wide array of enemies at you and focused around a moderately deep combat system, balancing stamina, mana and weapon types.
This game really pushes both ends of the spectrum. Most of the stuff is drawn in mspaint to the quality level you'd expect of drugged up first grader, though its certainly distinct and clearly intentional. Outside of that, its got a lot of effects, some high quality particle work and plenty of functionality outside of the aesthetic style.
Gameplay wise, the stage segments are quite varied a lot of the time, mixing up combat with many different enemies with a handful of different gimmicks along the way and some sporadic traps to keep you on your toes. There's quite a few bosses as well, which are all quite unique and of mixed quality. Additionally, there's a fairly involved story which is all in Japanese and I have no idea what happened but its kind of amusing to imagine what could be as you interact with a wide cast of characters in diverse environments. There's a ton of content here in general, and while quite easy can still take hours to get through.
Overall, this is one of those games that I feel like fits the theoretical list of fangames that are noteworthy in their own ways - not necessarily entirely for quality - but definitely unmatched by others. If you like the quirky, bizarre and unpredictable side of fangames this is a must-play recommendation. If you like traditional fangame design, this probably won't be for you - there's nothing normal about this game, really standing out as an eccentric oddity amongst a niche not known for conforming to traditional design either.

I had issues with a certain visual effect not working on my computer, and making the kid invisible. I made a patch to remove this effect. Said patch, as well as a translation of the skill tree (thanks Canus), are available from adventure FSR.
Gobou is perhaps one of the most unique fangames out there. In a rare turn of events, platforming takes the back seat, to the point where it's almost non-existent. Rather, the focus is on defeating enemies with a surprisingly vast arsenal of weaponry and skills.
Admittedly, the combat is rather simple. Most enemies don't move, they all have pretty simple attacks. For a lot of the game, it's pretty boring just sitting out of an enemy's range and attacking them until they die. The sections that have multiple enemies attacking at once somewhat alleviate this, but many saves are unfortunately just long strings of single enemies (with traps)!
The real highlight of the game is the incredible skill tree, which you unlock decently far into the game. It features three main classes you can choose between (essentially fighter, mage, rogue), and it also had a wide variety of neutral skills. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I was motivated to switch my kit around. Some enemies/bosses are easy to burst down with melee, while others require range, or the vertical beam attack to hit them above you. I also was switching between various buffs, to increase my energy, mana, or even speed. I at first thought a speed buff was useless, but I found a place for it in the final boss with it's large arena! This really kicked up my enjoyment of the game, as it made the combat more of a puzzle to figure out what build would best deal with a given save.
The bosses, while not particularly unique, are quite fun, as the skills create different combat paradigms than are usually featured in fangames. I had a lot of fun figuring out when I could safely use skill in order to maximize damage and defeat the bosses as quickly as possible.
Additionally, I would be remiss if I didn't mention some of the fun obstacles in the non combat sections. The minecart rides were really cool, they really spiced up the game and kept the middle from getting boring. I liked how the game used cycle based obstacles like crushers and lasers. There was also a cool maze section that was based around finding values to solve a math equation.
Ultimately, I may have had no idea what was going on in the Japanese story, but that doesn't mean I didn't have fun. Gobou was a super unique experience, and the skill tree was implemented really well to create a lot of variety in how you can approach things. Definitely a recommendation for adventure fans, with bonus points since it's very approachable to beginners.

Don't let the poorly-drawn sprites fool you, this game is actually so much better than it looks. The levels are mostly based on fighting with enemies rather on the actual platforming. There's also a diverse weapons/skills system, which makes this game really unique. And it even gives some space for cheesing strats.
There are many dialogues in this game, but since everything's written in japanese, you're most likely to miss the major part of the plot if you're not a jp speaker. The plot is really long and I just wanted for it to end when there was like 60% of the game awaiting ahead. Since I enjoy more platforming-based fangames, this whole experience was rather a miss for me.
Nevertheless, it is a nice fangame. It's unique, it's original, it's mostly fun, chaotic but charming. I recommend to give it a shot.

Whew, there's a lot to unpack here. I'm not gonna be the one to do it because there's just too much I can't understand in this game because it's in japanese. It's fun enough, but without knowing the language some parts feel slightly vague at least to me. I needed a video to get through the skill tree tutorial, seriously. The bad: Everything looks awful. There's a lot of janky enemies i dont like fighting and the traps feel weird and out of place. The good? This game is ripe with AMAZING weapon variety, it's a shame the good part of that only becomes available over halfway through the game.
