Defeat the Robot is a very well produced game with a heavy focus on fast-paced gameplay and some very intense boss fights, which made it a very fun ride for me. It has some hiccups in design which are certainly questionable, but for me it didn't detract from the overall experience.

The game is split into a series of stages, each with a respective boss to match the stage's theme. As the name suggests, you'll be killing a lot of robots. The platforming is fairly enjoyable with some fun little segments and enemy-based gameplay, although it does have a fair share of weaknesses. Notably, there are saves where upon starting you'll be forced to immediately charge a shot just to kill an enemy by the start, which feels kind of pointless. There's also some sketchy parts in one stage where a visual effect obstructs a save point surrounded by enemies, which can leave you feeling scammed out of victory. The poison blurry visual effect is also a bit much and would be great if there was a toggle or an intensity slider.

Despite these faults, there's still solid platforming to be had. But for me the strength lies with the bosses. Important to note, the vast majority of boss fights (especially the ending few) are very learn heavy. Whilst telegraphing does happen, there is also an abundance of attacks that you'll have to commit to learning after dying. It's not usually my kind of preferred boss, but in this case it was a blast. The fights all flow very nicely once you learn them, and it feels very rewarding to execute everything whilst making use of your dash and stomp mechanics, which both go a long way to making the game feel more fast-paced and engaging.

A special mention goes to the final few bosses. They're substantially more learn-heavy than everything else and pretty tricky too, but for me it was a blast to learn and get consistent at reading their attacks. The final boss in particular has a staggering amount of attacks which makes it even more daunting, but not once did it become unfun for me. Having said that, it's a very divisive style of boss which many people won't find enjoyment with, but for those that do, you're guaranteed a rewarding experience.

My biggest issue in the game for me lies with the hidden stage/boss. To get to the final boss, you're required to find and beat the hidden stage/boss. This stage has some really awkward jumps and segments in it, topped off with a boss that gets kinda silly with some phase 2 attacks in regards to fairness and reactions. I do kind of wish this wasn't required for the normal ending, but it is what it is. I'd probably suggest playing the game without going for the hidden stage, and if you make it to the end and you're invested then go back for it so you can experience the final boss. By then, you'll probably be invested enough.

Overall though, it's a solid game with brilliant production value and very engaging bosses, being dragged down by some questionable design choices here and there. I still had a blast with it though, and would recommend it to any boss lover who doesn't mind a bit of learning and some challenge.

The synopsis of this is a very polished looking, extremely well produced fangame that seeks to some extent to bring us into the modern age. 16:9 resolution and 60 fps on a modified yuuutu engine looks and runs well, with very clean production and tons of great looking effects. Visually, this is top notch in the fangame world.

However, gameplay wise its a bit shaky. I quit on the final boss once I realized there was nothing more for me to get from this game. I enjoyed the majority of the platforming, as much of it is very good, though there are occasional segments that go beyond being weak to the point where they feel like they can only be intentional stupid. This includes pick a door segments, segments where the player gets teleported to a save point except both themselves and the save point are visibly covered and enemies shoot you immediately if you don't know whats happening, segments where they open up with sitting there for a second to charge your charged shot as the only option and so on. These are generally few and far between, but when they come up its really questionable.

Finally, to some extent, the meat of the game being labeled as an action game is the bosses. They're... problematic. All of them are well produced, with great use of sounds, voices and effects to make them look and sound good. However it went overboard at the cost of gameplay I felt. The profuse screenshake was a huge detriment in my opinion and hitboxes were unclear due to the visual effects. These are the minor things though. The main problem here is that every boss is basically the same, and its a boss archetype I despise. If you're familiar with the DWBA1 yellow devil (as a well known example), its all basically that. Every arena is a flat surface, every boss has multiple attacks that get in your face and multiple attacks that are insta-gibs or near at close range. So it becomes a game of keeping your distance, herding the boss around while he rushes you at high speed and hoping you can avoid getting pinned in the corner and if you do, hoping he doesn't use an attack that kills you. That said, none of them are really unfair, there's tools to avoid it but god if it isn't tedious to learn the tells for the same conceptual attacks over and over. Every boss also contains an enrage phase which is generally filled with basically instagibs til you learn them, forcing a ton of repetition. The ton of attacks is appreciable, but boy does it not feel great a lot of the time.

Its probably worth taking a look at, but if you find yourself not liking the bosses that won't change because they don't change. If you do like those kinds of bosses though, this'll be a few hours of pretty fast-paced adventure gameplay that is quite good and has a lot of work put into it.

Wasn't much of a fan of the hidden boss since I never figured out how to dodge one attack so I had to keep trying and trying until I cleared the boss without getting that attack. Also you can't leave the hidden stage which is something that the game should let the player do.

Final boss might have went a little too far, 3 phases, the 1st and 2nd one being clearly more tough than all the previous bosses, and the 3rd phase being the most interesting one but also the most difficult one. I didn't mind learning all the attacks of the boss fight, but comparing the final boss to the previous stages/bosses, it felt like a huge difficulty jump. The boss itself is a blast to play so I honestly didn't mind it besides the frame drops on some attacks.

I really wished this game would run on my low end PC without any FPS drops but few bosses, mainly final boss and hidden boss, have some heavy lag inducing attacks PepeHands.

I'd still recommend Defeat The Robot if the player doesn't mind getting used to slightly different physics, the production value is amazing, the song choice is a banger, and the platforming was overall well done. There are 10 secret golden cubes but they just unlock cosmetic stuff.

Rating is for True Final Boss (v1.5).

Would recommend not going for True Ending.
