So, I've made the decision not to give this game a rating. This is because it feels unfair to Fangame, considering its historical context. This game is super important to fangame history, and shaped the games that came after is significantly. Thus, it would feel wrong to me to rate it with expectations built upon games that iterated on its design.
However, I ultimately cannot recommend that anyone play this game, except to experience a piece of fangame history. By modern standards almost everything is quite unpleasant. The physics feel bad, with a low double jump (and almost unconscionable water physics). The traps are generic at best (which is something I really can't blame the game for, since it started these trends). The gimmicks are really buggy, notably the portal stage.
By far the worst offender is that so much of the game is just designed around wasting people's time. While IWBTG is a rage game, it felt like one where the player was in on the joke. Yeah it was unfair, but it was funny! Fangame on the other hand feels truly designed to just make the player regret playing it. Stuff like the snake section, the appearing blocks section (which feels less reactable than the one in Guy), the Cacodemon boss, and more all exemplify a style of design where the player just has to wait for a long time, doing rote movements, before dying to something new, and then repeating until they've memorized the entire section. The most vile save in this regard is the final one, which begins with a long, nothing screen involving a bad cycle, and lots of standing still. This is then followed by a slow, learny autoscroller that is basically guaranteed to kill you with every new obstacle.
Overall, this is a game that aged extremely poorly. This is quite a shame, as I felt that Guy aged really well. Unfortunately, I can't say I enjoyed almost any of my time in Fangame. While it is extremely interesting as a historical artifact, this interest can probably be satisfied by watching a playthrough, rather than subjecting yourself to it.

Possibly impossible unless someone finds a way to get past the spikes on the bottom right of the screenshot. When you press A it shows a gun icon, but that is all I found. There could be some hidden gimmick from this specific engine that this game uses to get past the spike wall but I couldn't find anything.
