This is such a strange game because at once it has so many good and fun traps that are legitimately hilarious, and yet it was also not very fun to play. There is so much downtime and walking in every save that it makes it all feel quite tedious and detracts from the experience. The sheer number of traps in every save doesn’t help this either so the amount of time I spent on saves made it somewhat of a slog. I wish I liked this more but I just don’t.

Generally speaking, I think I find myself preferring newer fangames to older ones. Newer fangames have the benefit of hindsight and several years of fangames to draw upon to learn from. The general level of quality and production has trended upward in every sense of the word. There’s something older fangames have over newer ones in my opinion though, and that’s just how raw they are. Older fangames are not afraid to throw random bullshit in your face no matter what you may think. Is it a good idea to make a stage based purely on squished blocks and vstrings? I won’t give a definitive answer, but most new fangames would not even attempt that because of how divisive it is.

To this day, there is no fangame I have ever played that is quite like Butterfly. I enjoyed how daring it is. I enjoyed how raw the platforming is. It is like a collection of ideas that just totally land as a complete package for me. I was so happy the entire time and I laughed even at the stuff that is just baffling. I won’t argue it’s a perfect game, but it’s a perfect game for me specifically. I wish more fangames like this existed.

It’s… fine? I thought the platforming was okay and most of the bosses were unremarkable. The last 2 bosses were worse by virtue of being harder. The final boss in particular definitely gave me some totally unfair rng and unwinnable scenarios. If I was any worse at fangames I might have hated this experience. But I got it fairly quickly and so I didn’t mind too much. Not really doing it for me.

Compared to Heaventrap 1, the second game is a slightly easier, slightly more ambitious experience compared to what came before it. There are more fangames referenced and more variance in the visuals. It’s a decently constructed game and I think around the same level of quality as Heaventrap 1. I think I prefer that game though purely because it feels a little more engaging than this one. Overall a good time.

A very cute and effective trap game with some traps that actually improve the platforming experience and generally make traversing screens fun even after dying a lot, something I personally get hung up on when playing trap games. The final boss soured the experience a little for me but it’s overall a very well crafted experience.

For: I wanna Sunspike
Sunspike was one of the first fangames I ever played. I was suggested it in 2016 as a way to improve my needle skills which at the time I appreciated given that I was bad at everything. I got to around the start of stage 6 before I bottomed out in skill level and patience. Over the years I’ve always meant to go back and finish the game as my skill level in both needle and bosses improved but for one reason or another never got around to it. Now, over 7 years later, I can say I finally have cleared it, and the game is just okay.

The needle is fairly generic but I’ve never had a problem with that. I think it’s less so that it’s generic and moreso that it uses generic jumps relatively effectively to enforce certain inputs. The room layouts are nothing crazy and verge on corridor needle, but I like them. It’s probably nostalgia and if it were in a game nowadays it would be even more throwaway, but for its time it’s pretty good.

The boss is really boring and the difficulty is concentrated into just a few key attacks which have a high variance in how difficult they are. It feels like the avoidance never really “starts” if that makes any sense and I’m just waiting until I’m presented with either comparatively unreasonable rng or something totally free. There’s a lot of sitting around and either waiting or barely doing anything. The sphere is still a cool attack even today and it definitely is the best part of the fight.

I’m left with an appreciation for what this game did for fangames and how it helped both needle and avoidance take the next step as genres, but nowadays it really only feels worth experiencing as a means to see an influential fangame.

It's good needle game when you play good stages, and it's bad needle game when you play bad ones. Fortunately good ones are mostly easier ones (Shinobu, Biogom, Peranche, Oyo really made some hot bangers here), so bless this game
