Yoyo has outdone himself yet again, with another great release in the genre he performs best in — adventure. Sugar is unlike any other Yoyo game, in the sense that his style is greatly overhauled to the point where it’s practically unrecognizable (in a good sense) compared to his early style. this is where I raise an eyebrow at the imposed claim that this is a Salt remake/reimagination. I personally hardly find any similarities between the two. the Venn diagram of Salt and Sugar barely crosses over due to how large the time gap is (not to mention how big the ‘gamemaking prowess’ gap is)
Yoyo is to this day one of my favorite makers for one reason and one reason only — he keeps it simple. no bullshit, just the rawest form of adventure. stage, secret, boss, stage, secret, boss, final stage, final boss, extra stage, extra boss. this time there’s a lack of extra, but it doesn’t matter since the base game already has a bunch of content anyway. to prove this game’s quality, I’ll share a part of my personal experience with the game. I had to clear every stage in the game twice to find all the secrets since I had missed them in my initial runthrough. however, this wasn’t the first time I had to do this in a Yoyo game. I had the same issue in Salt, where it felt boring and drawn-out. in stark contrast to Salt, reclearing stages in this game felt just as, if not somehow more fun than the first time. there’s simply a lot more to do in this game when compared to its predecessors. only Time Characters really compares to Sugar in terms of content. Time Characters is a bit of an old game and sticks to super basic platforming with a few gimmicks thrown in. Sugar isn’t much different, but feels more ‘complete’ as a game. the best way to fully understand what I’m talking about is to just play the game and see for yourself. the bosses are notably much harder here than in any other Yoyo adventure game. of course, it’s still no match for some of Yoyo’s avoidances. I would be shitting myself if the Gel monster appeared as one of the bosses in an adventure game

A fun needle game featuring a variety of gimmicks such as... platform jumps, platform jumps, and platform jumps. ...So if you don't like those maybe stay away because they are half of the game. But otherwise, this is a game with some well designed saves that make usage of the gimmicks well.
I really liked the falling block stage. I felt like this variety of platform jump lent itself well to interesting routing and saves that were speed focused, yet refrained from feeling too tight on the time requirements. I also really liked the pass-through vines. This was a really clever gimmick, and I felt like the needle flowed well. A third shout out goes to the singe use water stage. The stage managed to make many creative situations where you had to avoid jumping in the water until the time is right.
Overall, I found this to be a really fun gimmick needle game for somewhat advanced players. Unless you really dislike platform jumps, I would definitely recommend this game.
