From the title, I expected this to be a parody/homage to truly ancient needle games, but it isn't really similar to that sort of design at all... Actual games from 2009 would not use so many named jumps or incorporate platforms and water 2 the way this does. They would also be made on Nekoron, feature restarting Guy Rock, and be generally terrible in all ways, but yes.

Anyway, I actually enjoy generic 32px needle like this, and I don't have a problem with very basic aesthetics, so I had fun with it. But it's not much of a "game" given that it's only three screens long. If the creator made something a lot longer in the same vein, I'd definitely give it a shot.

It surprises me how people can recognize a game with so many good ideas and love towards NES classics as bad, but not other renowned ones such as See the Moon and the Conquer the Blow Game Trilogy. I Wanna be the GB and Best Guy get brutal bashing, however. Much more than they deserve. There seems to be a natural hatred towards adventure fangames. The original I Wanna Be the Guy still ranks in my top and I Wanna Be the Fangame is really undervalued. I think it all comes down whether if you get the references or not, but most of the complaints come from the gameplay and the production value.

As being one of those first fangames made during the release of several with the standard engine, this has flaws in gameplay, definitely, and everything can be summped up with two very bad issues:

1) Save placement
2) Traps and cryptic sections that are traps

Ideas are very fun; unfair and frustrating deaths almost completely annihilate enjoyment, and it's somewhat paradoxical, because worlds are fun to explore and yet they are not. Production value comes from the spirit of I Wanna Be the Fangame, which is terrific, but bosses are horrible (one is a long chase with traps and Koffing in particular is RNG AIDS) and platforming is mostly poorly done. Variety is present and should be respected visually, but what good makes variety and ideas (with nice production value, mind you) if you have no soul?

The envisioning was there, but everything got wasted by very lazy ideas, such as in GB. However, it is not as terrible as reviews might sell it to you. However, it is bad and it's a shame. We still have options like Magnanimity and Conscience.

I'm conflicted on this, on one hand, I kinda like the needle in the game, but on the other hand, it's very generic with the most generic graphics possible (Gray background, default tileset, ect.) I think making a bigger needle project would give you more confidence in your creations.
Had this been longer, and had better visuals, this could have been really great.

Review based on hard mode since it's the intended difficulty.
Really good game with neat visuals, a 16:9 aspect ratio and despite the weird fact that the screen looks small, it doesn't affect the gameplay.
For the game itself, it's an interesting and relatively short metroidvania where you are seeking for new oxygen masks to increase your breathing bar, which is a freacking good idea. There are also some cool gimmick like oxygen bubbles and some system to increase or decrease the water level. What really annoyed me tho was those fishes. They move like sonic in boshy, at a really fast speed and when you have many of them around you, they can become a pain to avoid. And because the boss was basically a big fish which spawn some little ones, I didn't liked it and it really teared down my overall enjoyement. It's not especially that hard, it's just very annoying. Still a good game.
