The traps are specifically designed to waste as much time as possible, and the bosses are also designed in such a way. I don't think there was a single fun boss in the game for me, much less any screens except for the single iconic VVVVVV screen. Not a huge fan personally.

The beginning of the game really doesn't do it justice to how awesome the game is later on. It starts off with restarting music, a bunch of traps, and mediocre visuals, but slowly, the game starts introducing crazy visual effects and really cool bosses. The VVVVVV area is a highlight of the game, and a lot of the late-game bosses have high production value and were fun to play. The beginning is the only section of the game that seems to lack effort.

Diverse has some nice creativity in it especially given the age of the game, and the variety of the boss fights and stage themes in particular was a highlight for me. Unfortunately I didn't enjoy the game as much as I expected to for a couple of reasons.
The bosses whilst mostly being thematically interesting and having strong variety as mentioned earlier, often felt tedious to get through due to the insta-gibby nature of some of them. Ultimate Luigi was a particular offender as was the Device fight beforehand. The bosses aren't necessarily bad but I suppose the particular style just wasn't much fun for me.
The other reason again is something which I don't think is necessarily a bad thing, but just sucked a lot of the fun out for me was the abundance of traps. It's the nature of the game and I didn't mind it for the most part, but a few segments felt like such a slog to get through. The final stage in particular had some screens that really just dragged due to the tedious flying-spike traps. That's not to say it was without some fun segments too, but the tedium ended up being more memorable for me.
Despite the gripes, it's a memorable adventure and I'd say definitely worth playing. I think most people will enjoy it more than I did in the long run. Also perhaps worth mentioning that I played the Sephalos mod version which replaced a couple of songs, fixed restarting music and made some visual changes, which no doubt improved the experience for me. Of course if you want the authentic Guy Rock experience then maybe you won't need it.

An older traditional adventure game, considered a classic and seen and used in a lot of medleys. Follows the formula of a hub into stages/bosses followed by linear segments.
This game is quite the mixed bag for me. I don't feel like its aged that well, but some things it still does great. Production-wise, it was definitely ahead of its time with a lot of effects and lots of fancy flair - especially in the bosses. Compared to games of its age, it stands out but a lot of these effects are kind of obnoxious and not that special compared to what we see anymore. As a huge critic of visual challenge effects, this one definitely toed the line and crossed it more than once.
Likewise the platforming feels super dated - basically never diverts from 32 pixel grid spikes and gibby flyingspike traps or fake blocks that made much of it feel extremely tedious to me. Occasionally there's a neat gimmick/segment thrown it, and thankfully there's enough of them that you never feel like its a waste of time to continue, but the overall quality is not great.
The bosses also show their age, with the kind of design you expect from older fangames. They're very pattern heavy and quite learn heavy - a number of them are also quite long with a lot of boring downtime, so expect to spend some time on them though they aren't that difficult. To their credit though, they are very elaborate and memorable and its easy to see why this is a well-remembered game.
Overall its a really interesting game and still worth playing, especially as part of fangame history. If you're only concerned in the play experience though and don't enjoy the old-school adventure style, I'd give it a pass - there's definitely a lot of it I didn't enjoy but it undeniably still has a fair amount to offer.
