The sequel to Salt, though I see it as more of a prequel.
Follows similarly to Salt in that you can beat the game normally and it's a pretty fun, not that long, relatively easy adventure. 100% on the other hand...

The game requires a lot of secrets that are pretty hard to find on your own, but you can very easily go back and find them after you've beaten a stage. The Gray stage unlocks after getting all secret parts, and to get secret parts you need all of the secret keys. Some of the keys are in pretty out of the way places, but none are unbearable.

The platforming is what makes this game worth it. I have said before and I will state it here, if Yo-yo made a game with the platforming of sugar and the bosses of salt it would be a 10/10 from me.

Still, would recommend to anyone who liked Salt, likes adventure games, or just wants a game to start out with to play progressively to get better.

Sugar is a fantastic adventure game that feels very reminiscent of the older-style adventure games seen many years ago, but with a clean brand of polish and some very fun yet simple gimmicks scattered throughout to make for a super memorable adventure.

The game is split into a multitude of stages, each with a secret key and secret area/warp inside. These secret keys are required to access the 6th stage and what's classed as the "normal" end of the game, and the secret areas/warps are required alongside them to access the true end. Whilst I'd 100% recommend going for the true end, some of the secrets are quite honestly absurdly stupid to the point where it's funny. To name a couple, one stage has an invisible button that you need to shoot to open the warp on the previous screen, and another has a hidden block in a random floor opening you need to activate after finishing a puzzle to open up the warp. They're pretty funny but unless you're a search-a-holic you might want to resort to a guide. Sonoko on YouTube has a very helpful video guide to the secrets which I'd recommend if you decide to do so.

Anyway, the flow of the game follows a very similar format of stage -> boss -> stage -> boss. Each usually plays around a certain gimmick with the exception of the 1st one, and the gimmicks are generally done pretty well. Stage 4 in particular had a very fun gimmick playing off different colour zones locking down your movement ability (or empowering it) which provided some fun gameplay without ever getting too complicated or overwhelming, and stage 5 whilst being a puzzle stage was the most part pretty straightforward and satisfying to plod through.

Some minor gripes platforming-wise would be a couple of saves feel like a sudden spike in difficulty compared to those prior to it, namely one in stage 4 that involved a secret entrance. There's also one puzzle (although it's actually part of a "boss") that has to be done under timed pressure which caused some frustration. I ended up printscreening it and solving it after dying. I also wasn't a fan of the pre-true-final-boss platforming which is 16 pretty easy screens without any saves. It's a neat throwback to Yoyo's past games but it felt unnecessary and should've been way shorter to alleviate any frustration.

Each stage also has a boss, which for the most part are really fun! A lot of attacks are barrage-based and less-so on the learny side of things which definitely catered to my preference. I did notice that the 1st boss felt like the hardest boss for the first 5 stages which seemed rather odd, but it was fun regardless. A special mention though goes to the true end bosses which are absolutely some of the highlights of the game. The visual design is really slick and the attacks felt varied and fair, never reaching the point of frustration.

There's also an avoidance to round off the true end of the game. I was pleasantly surprised to find the avoidance was a treat for the eyes and very visually different what I'd seen in the rest of the game. The attacks felt well choreographed and flowed together rather well, and other than an early attack which took a few tries to get down, nothing felt too challenging. It was a nice send-off for the game and left me with a very good sugary aftertaste for the adventure.

My only complaint with the bosses would be in regards to boss 5, which is essentially a collection of puzzle rooms using the gimmick established in the stage. As mentioned earlier, timed puzzles became frustrating for me and there's a fair amount of rooms you're expected to do under timed pressure which gave me some gripes by the end. It's a small blotch in the grand scheme of things though.

Overall Sugar is just a great game. It never goes into any particular gimmick too intensely but for what it does, it does well. The design felt like it focused on being fun above all else, and it was a very pleasant surprise. I'd very much recommend going for 100% as the end-game content is a treat.

Sugar is an interesting game, filled with unique ideas that stand the test of time on their own, but not so much the execution that accompanies them.

The game follows the usual classic adventure game system of hub with a stage select, with a boss on the end of them. It also has secrets, and boy are they secret. I found a couple by complete accident, but I would have never been able to find some of the more, uh... colorful ones in some of the stages. Use a guide, basically.

Sugar mostly eschews strict movement based gimmicks outside of one stage, which I'm personally a fan of. It's mostly different types of platforming that you'll interact with, and the one movement based stage is actually really cool. It restricts movement based on color, but not too much, just a direction. It makes for some very cute traps and brain fuckery.

What I think holds Sugar back is that... the game is really tedious. I feel like every single save in this game is either in the air, seconds away from any real platforming, or both. The secret keys never have a save in them, so god forbid you die and have to do half or all of a given screen to reach it again. Luckily the game isn't too hard, but every death feels like its worth hundreds because the game seeks to waste your time at every moment. Most of the secret warps are screens worth of backtracking after finishing something already aswell.

This comes to a head at the last stage of the game, which is >>16<< straight screens of rather easy platforming that is designed to make you hate your life should you die. I have no real idea why anyone would think this is a good idea. It's not really satisfying to do, but horrible to fail at.

And honestly, despite the praise I give it, most of the platforming in the game both doesn't last very long and is kind of forgetable at the end of the day. I can barely remember a lot of the screens from the earlier stages aswell, just that dreary feeling of retrying a secret. While varied, there's just not a lot that sticks with you or goes very far with any idea. Sadly, it's just... not very fun most of the time, outside of about 3 stages.

So, yeah. I thought the EX Boss was really cool, but I couldn't really bring myself to do the avoidance. The game just wasn't worth it at that point.

If you're more patient than I am or find more fun in sheer variety than execution, then you'll probably get more out of this than I did. But I found it to be kind of a let down.

This review is based on a 100% Clear

Where Salt is a game that is brought down by it's simplistic nature, Sugar is one which feels enhanced by it. Obviously I love over the top gimmicks, mechanics, boss fights, ridiculous needle, but I think Sugar is a game which really reels all that in, and instead provides simplistic, core fangame gameplay that is just solid. The stages consistent of their gimmicks with a healthy mix of traps, never feeling overbearing or obnoxious. Some of the gimmicks are quite fun or at least interesting, I particularly liked the mechanics in stage 4 and 5, as they felt the most in depth and rich. The bosses are pretty good too, I think the true final boss is probably the best one, but they are all good and fun fights, again, being quite simple! Overall I think if you don't mind a more traditional experience, sugar is an easy recommendation.
