Update: Version 1.2 is now available, with several balance changes, notably to the final boss. Be sure to update!

After the events of I Wanna Be The Guy, The Kid is invited to a game show hosted by an imposing figure! Fight your way through several game challenges to compete for a high score. Do you have what it takes to master these games and win the grand prize?

Developed by Cherry Treehouse for Fangame Marathon 2022's Blind Adventure event, WannaFest 22 is a fast-paced rollercoaster through hidden gaming gems of the past!

Features:

-> Several stages faithfully based on cult classic games
-> Fast-paced gameplay focused on variety and scoring
-> Unique and exciting boss encounters
-> Crisp, colorful graphics and catchy music
-> Reprising voice actors from the original I Wanna Be The Guy
-> Plenty of achievements and extras
-> Full controller support
-> English and Japanese (subtitles) support

This was a heavy collaborative effort, no single stage was developed by only one person.

We worked really hard on this, we hope you enjoy it!

this is awesome, one of my favourite fangames, it is a journey through really old games with some iwbtg gameplay mixed in and it's beautiful, absolutely love what the guys from cherry treehouse made, they keep making awesome fangames, keep it up!

Before I start this review, I just want to say that I mean no ill will towards the creators of this game.
They are all awesome people and I wish them the best!

With that being said, my feelings on Wannafest 22 are complicated.

When I first saw this game in FM22, I was super hyped. How could I not be? Look at it!

Then when the game came out, I couldn't play it on my computer at the time so I had to wait until I got a new one, which only added to my anticipation.

Then I played it.

At first, I thought it was a masterpiece!

But then, as I played through the game, a sinking feeling appeared.

That feeling being... disappointment.

But before I start getting negative, I want to list all the positives.

- This game looks absolutely fantastic. Almost flawless!
- I think the Klonoa and Parappa stages were cool.
- The final area (pre-final boss) is pretty good.

And that's all the stuff I liked.

The rest of the game is either mediocre or just... not good.

- The stages are really unoriginal. They all feel like rom hacks which, while it is technically impressive, just makes me feel like "Why am I playing this when I could be playing the actual game?"
This is why I like the final area, it's the only part that feels like a real fangame, which in an iwbtg fangame isn't a good thing.

- The bosses are meh but the final boss is downright unfun. That boss single-handedly made me take this game from a 6/10 to a 5/10.
Even a carbon copy of the OG guy fight would have been better than... whatever that boss is.

- Traps are spread too far apart and when they happen, they end up feeling cruel instead of comedic.

- The Super Monkey Ball stage goes on for WAAAAY too long. 5 full stages of ball rolling was not necessary. 3 or even 2 would've been just fine.

I could go on but I don't like being negative that much so I'll stop it here.

With all that being said... I would still recommend this game to others and even newcomers.
It's a great showcase of this community's best talent and it seems that most people really like this game.

If you enjoy this game, good! I'm glad someone could like what I couldn't.

As for me? I'm going to bed. I'm tired.

Definitely high up with past FM adventures in terms of quality, with abundant production value and aesthetics. I can't even begin to imagine all the work it took to make the 2.5D stages look this good.
The gameplay in the main stages is pretty fun; my favorite stages were Goemon and Parappa . On the other side, the Sonic chase was too long and Monkeyball felt a bit "throw lives at it" luck based sometimes , although part of that might be attributed to the base games.
My main gripe is with the final boss, which is a significant difficulty spike and while the concept is fine, I feel that the execution could have been better. To be specific, the difficulty gap between the easier and the harder roulette picks feels too big. The quiz becoming free is unavoidable, but the targets pick, the eye lasers and the wrecking cherry could be more interesting and less free. The money pick is also free once you notice you can bait and outrun the punishment; I would have lowered the debt and given bonus damage if you get enough credit instead, to incentivize the money collection. At the other end, Destination could be slightly nerfed, and platform snap is very annoying on Colonel; special mention to the anvil pick, which has a low but significant chance of screwing you over.

Overall I'd still highly recommend it, but be prepared for a long endurance boss!
