I have no clue why this is rated so high. This was easily one of the worst fangame experiences I've ever had. I am giving this a 4 only because I understand the effort that went into this game, but understand that I had a 0/10 time with it.
The best part of this game is the atmosphere, but even that feels disconnected at times. Some areas like the foggy area fit perfectly with the music, and truly feel desolate and lost. But other areas completely forget that Domu is supposed to be dark and moody, while others feel completely empty.
The music doesn't help either. Every stage has some boring ambient track that rarely fits with the visuals or level theming. I feel like any other music would have fit so much better, but instead, every stage has the same droning loop. Horrible.
I would argue the main reason I dislike Domu was the design. Almost every single save has some sort of weird jump, strange difficulty spike, or bullshit trap at the end. The game is so clear about wasting your time. What makes traps good in other adventure games? Two things: they are funny, and they are usually at the beginning of the save. Arcana of the Tarot cleverly placed its traps near the beginning of the save, which saves the player time. You aren't clever for having a spike fly down at the end of a hard save.
Every stage has these annoying apple circles. Often, the cycles of these will be randomized, so doing these saves is such a fucking annoyance. And every single stage has them. They aren't even reskinned to something clever, and they don't even fit in with the stage theme!
This game also has a lot of bonk spamming! Yay! Everyone's favorite jump!
And while the gimmicks were a bit clever, they were implemented in the worst ways possible. Obnoxious jumps and over-precise bullshit is very common in Domu. It's horrible.
The bosses are also incredibly lackluster, and usually boil down to "pray you don't get hit and beat the boss in like 30 seconds!" It's very anticlimactic to reach the end of a series of stages and see one of these bosses.
Overall I do not recommend Domu. I can name many other adventure games that are well worth your time, but this one is not one of them.
