Hey, welcome to my profile, I've wanted to make a fangame for a while now; I've been part of this community since 2008 but I've pretty much always been a lurker, very little post history and it's on a different name anyways; if you've streamed IWBTG I've probably lurked your stream before.
Not as skilled as you may think.
I have played a wide array of fangames; my clear list isn't up to date. My favorite genres are Puzzle and Adventure. Don't like Avoidance. If you got any fangame recommendations please let me know.
Even though I have never done a fangame I still like to give my opinion on the games I play, even if they tend to be from a perspective of someone that's not as good or as knowledgeable of how fangames work.

For: I wanna be the Computer!
This game is a disaster, has interesting concepts but doesn't go anywhere near close to what you could do with it. It gives you mashing bosses way too often:
To explain what I mean, I will tell you how the game starts:
You go through a tutorial for 5 screens, then you get teleported to a different screen, one screen later you get a boss. This boss only shoots 2 attacks that are easily avoidable. But he has tons of HP so you gotta mash that shoot button. After this you go 2 (two) screens and there you go another boss where you gotta mash while evading super easy attacks. This happens for most of the game. Way too many uninspired bosses in such a short time.
Save placement is awful. After playing on hard I went back on Medium to see the saves because i couldn't believe that I had to pass like 4 screens a boss and another screen to get another save. Turns out even on medium you gotta do that (to a lower degree)
There's some platforming but it's really bad and the difficulty just escalates so fast for some reason. You go from jumping 2 spikes together to doing squished gates with fast-moving spikes.
Overall it was not worth it and I wouldn't recommend it to newcomers since it's just a mashing game
For: I wanna be like Brisulph
IWBTBrisulph is an ambitious game, with 6 different weapons and 7 characters you wouldn't be wrong to guess that this game has a lot of interactions, and it does. Enemies interact/die differently depending on the weapon you're using and some characters can get to places others can't. For example, you can freeze the water in world3 or you could bubble the enemies from world 5 for an instakill.
Sadly, this is where the praise ends.Having this amount of characters that can reach places others can't means you gotta pay attention to every detail of the level then get the secret character (because they're hidden around the levels) and finally backtrack all the way to the place you think a secret is located. Which is, obviously, tedious. And that's because the platforming is boring. The game is glitchy as hell and some gimmick are actually awful (Ice level,Bomberman waiting,Swarms).
However after going through the first half and getting all characters/weapons the game starts picking up again. Sadly this doesn't last long but I thought it might be worth pointing out
Overall I would say this game had a lot of potential but ended up being dissapointing as it focused more on the little details and not the big picture.
I would recommend it only if you know some of the people this game references and you're determined to put up with it glitchyness
For: I wanna be the Platinum
The traps are obvious and there's not much platforming.
Sprites are altered and some drawn by someone (in MsPaint)
The music is alright most of the time except for one stage that has this super-low quality song.
The dialogue seems to be english translated to japanese then to english again.
The game is not actually long, you can beat it in under an hour.
Overall I would say it's... something, if you're looking to burn time mindlessly then be my guest.
For: I wanna be the Vardoc
Now on to the game:
First stage is some bad needle which consists of around 10 rooms with no gimmicks and literally just seeing them will tell you what you'll be getting yourself into, an extremely ugly pixelated-background with random tornadoes, some even stuck on the walls and random needle, showing a lack of interesting in making the gameworld feel and look good. Afterwards you get to the first boss, Airman. At first, as I said before I didn't even beat Airman, but since everything is a solid in this game by poor coding (this means that projectiles and bosses can get stuck on your bullets (which are also solids mind you)) you can actually glitch him so that he takes a lot of damage, funnily enough thanks to bad poor game design it's still hard even if you get him stuck, he has way too much HP, so much in fact that I actually thought he was impossible. The boss shoots out Tornadoes and since everything is a solid then those Tornadoes serve as sponges for your bullets and you do less damage. Once you beat him he throws out a warp in the direction he's going, really fast, so if you're not prepared (there's no way to tell when the boss will die) you're going to miss the warp and you will have to do the boss again! Funnily enough, the ENTIRE GAME is like that. A proof of inexperience when it comes to fun game design and just fangames in general. Every boss is just a bullet sponge that if you don't get stuck or cheese with save spots then you're not going to beat them. This game has way too much RNG which significates that skill is just thrown out the window and you just gotta believe that you get good enough RNG to beat it. This is literally the worst thing you can have in your game. Instead of making something fun and challenging it went out of it's way to make the most annoying and frustating thing it could make, because everytime you die to a boss or some dumb section like world2 it doesn't feel like your fault; it feels like you just got cheated out of your time.
Before knowing there was anything after Airman, I didn't think much of this game, it was just a short mindless poorly desinged game, but after playing through the rest of it; this might actually be the worst fangame ever created. While you could make the argument that games like "My heart will go on" or "chokochoko" because those games don't impose any challenge and are just time sinkers this one just makes you feel such dread and doesn't even respect the player nor the guy this game is tributed to: Vardoc1. You see, when you think of a tribute game I usually think of funny references to the person this is aimed at, this game barely has any: Just because he played those games doesn't make it a reference buddy. The only notable reference I can think of is boss 3 which is a reference to I Wanna be the GB final boss and his famous moment "Lo mate, mori, CTM".
Overall it's an excruciating game filled with nothing but above average difficulty jumps, horrible game designs, mind-boggling coding and horrible horrible bosses, which the last one seems to be impossible according to Koslyn, since his HP doesn't seem to go down, great thing they tested the game beforehand, and the worst part: it's barely a TRIBUTE. No, you know what, the worst part is that it actually wasn't tested beforehand, there's just too much solid proof that there wasn't and the fact that IF you kill kirby it will spawn "warpvardoc" while the actual warp name is "vardocwarp"... I really don't know what to say, I've never; in my entire decade playing fangames seen such incopetence when making a game. Still I shouldn't be so mean as this was probably made by a young child (at the time).
Skip this one, for you own sake really; it's really that bad.
For: I wanna be the Tribute
Music is above Average and the sprites could have been better.
I'm really saddened going back to this one after so many years and noticing that my Nostalgia-goggles where just tricking me and this one was actually bad, when I first played this I actually thought it might be my favorite fangame; looking at it right now, yeah no.
