a strange continuation of K2, where instead of going the main path to the final boss in K2 M-stage, you continue upward to the DEMO block area (which is now no longer blocked off in this game). this leads you to three screens of subpar needle followed by a buffed version of the final boss of Salt. I have no idea why this exists or the story behind this game at all. it just seems like a couple of strange ideas strewn together. I suppose the boss is kinda fun, but that's hardly Kamilia's doing

For: I wanna be the Butterfly Nova
Butterfly Nova is a truly revolutionary game that opened a whole new horizon of possibilities in precision. it's a super old precision game which, to my knowledge, contains the two oldest cactus jumps ever created. this on it's own is a very notable quality, and despite all this: it still holds up quite well nowadays. it's quite a fun and interesting precision game. it has some unique maneuvers that use some strange mechanics that you won't really see anywhere else, even in games of this genre. however, I do believe there are games that do this genre of needle better. it's just that I haven't played many of them
the highlight (or lowlight depending on the player) of the game are the two required cactus jumps. one of the cactuses is very lenient and can be done in several ways, while the second is far, far more difficult. a 5+7 into a 4f cancel is one of the meanest, most painful and annoying maneuvers I've ever had to do in any precision game. this is in part due to the fact I'm not great at cactusing, and I'm sure this would've been less difficult if I were better. I have trouble with any cactuses requiring secondary releases in excess of +5, so it wasn't a very fun maneuver. at least it was satisfying as all hell to pull off at the end. additionally, as a nice cherry on top, the last save is insultingly easy compared to the insane bullshit you had to go through right before it
the game itself is legendary and still quite fun to this day. the non-cactus saves are nothing to scoff at and require some strange and unorthodox maneuvers that you haven't seen in any other game before. this is considered unique even nowadays - but think about how unique and avant-garde this game was back when it was first released. I can't quite recommend it, but it sure is a classic

super fun precision game with a lot of interesting and unique maneuvers. in terms of tech requirement, I think there's only one required cancel but it isn't anything super crazy or difficult. there's also some align trickery which you have to deal with; it’s kind of the gimmick/idea in this game. it’s no align maze but it isn’t super straightforward either. this entails doing strange maneuvers to reach aligns that you'll need to progress. my favorite save is probably the topi jump save, it's just super satisfying and not too difficult to pull off. uses a few vines and some water but is mostly just some simple classic L-needle
overall super fun, despite the very difficult name. I can't easily recommend this to people without sounding insane

rating based on hard mode; I have played normal before
one of the most fun, interesting and easily recognizable games ever created. not just within needle, but within (non-viral) fangames in general. Catharsis is a beautiful game filled with great ideas, structuring and gimmicks from top to bottom. this game has some of the most fun gimmick needle ever made. every save plays ever-so-slightly different than the last, until suddenly an entire new gimmick or idea is introduced. these new gimmicks and ideas are then slowly built upon, making them slightly more complex each time. this formula of sorts repeats for a few cycles throughout the game until the end. every single area is super memorable and interesting. I’m confident that not a single time will this game make you think “that wasn’t so great” - or anything along those lines. it is so immaculately constructed that I can confidently say something like this. now, I pose the reader a question: how many other needle games can you come up with for which this can be said?
Catharsis is in the absolute sweetspot for difficulty: fairly tough and challenging for intermediate players - but just difficult enough for expert players to not play it mindlessly. it doesn’t pose any mechanical challenges, as in requiring keyboard-specific inputs like 2fs or cancels. of course, knowing how to do these tricks can make your time with the game you’re playing easier, but it isn’t required per se. this further extends to another great thing about Catharsis: the various skips and different paths it offers. they are notably much more difficult, but greatly shorter paths which you can take. additionally, many areas don’t have a clear path in the first place, and you have to figure one out on your own. some areas are rather convoluded, sort of like mazes, where only one way is correct. it’s all just so elegantly and nicely designed that you can’t help but appreciate it all. it’s beautiful how simple the gimmicks themselves are and how well they work
visually and atmospherically, the game is nearly unmatched. the name itself, Catharsis - it evokes a dreadful and captivating, yet somehow liberating feeling. the idea that you’re seeking catharsis is interesting and somewhat scary to think about. the ending could’ve used some work, but I feel the words themselves are memorable enough on their own. it’s not quite a ‘closed end’: there’s room for a sequel (or continuation rather) where the Kid further seeks his final and ultimate catharsis
artistic, meaningful and fantastic game. by far one of my favorites. highly recommended

very unique game. feels a lot older than it is, as the needle has some really antiquated and old-ass precision ideas. the game looks super unique and is very easily recognizable, on top of having some wacky and memorable movements. my personal favorites are the last save and the first save on the 2nd screen. those look and play in a quite funny way. other than that, it's okay at best. I think this game is a bit of a mood, so I gave it a higher score than I usually would
