Yoyo has always had some sort of obsession with long collectathon games. he has at least 3 games where the main gimmick is that there exist a ton of collectibles strewn throughout a bunch of stages with some bosses sprinkled in, and your job is to obtain all the collectibles and beat the bosses. this is a concept that's not often explored in fangames, as it's somewhat difficult to pull off - or it could be that it isn't a very interesting idea to some. Time Characters does it the best out of any game that tries this concept. the item placements vary from entirely unoriginal (just being behind some needle) to very original (restricting the player's movement in some way for a given save, doing several saves in a row, etc). these spice up the game's rather plain and simple nature. the items are hidden everywhere, nearly every screen has at least a few. there's 100 in total and 100%ing the game requires getting all of them and beating the final boss. there's a notably bad item though, that being the infamous RNG item. it has a pitifully low chance to hit, rivalling that of the worst gacha games out there (0.000021% or 1 in 47620). you have to hit 6x 1 in 6 chances in a row, with a rate of about 2 per second with optimal rolls. it's essentially a slot machine that you play repeatedly and hope for the best. this took me about 1.5 hours of constant rolls. maybe perhaps my luck isn't the greatest, but expect quite a lot of waiting around
the platforming is classic yoyo needle - very simple and fun. perhaps not the most intuitive, but it definitely has a charm to it that anyone can enjoy. I really like this style of needle, it doesn't really try to do much of anything too wacky and wild and sticks to what its good at. some people would call it boring, but I'd call it fun. on the other hand, the bosses aren't very notable and mostly boil down to a bunch of RNG attacks in true Yoyo fashion

pretty basic adventure game with not a ton going on. the platforming is sub-par and kind of annoying due to the bad engine not registering jumps properly after bonking. this is made especially apparent when you have to do jumps that require two quick and successive jumps, the first of which has to bonk. this sounds overly specific but you have to do these more often than you'd think. there's random traps everywhere and a gimmick every once in a while. the bosses are strange and not too well made, as some of them start off with either a weirdly small healthbar or already half-dead. one of the bosses (Sakuya) lags heavily, to amounts less than 1fps at some points. the true final boss, Miku, is just a mediocre and somewhat old Miku avoidance with not a ton going on. the line attack is notably weird as its seeded.. but the way it's seeded depends on the length of each line when it stops. I've never seen this happen before in any avoidance I've ever played

For: I wanna be the NCE3
NCE3 is different from the other NCE-series games, considering it adds a whole new gimmick to the basic and easy needle that the previous games are known for. this gimmick, being RNG, works somewhat well in the given use cases. RNG platforming can be made really stupid and really difficult really easily, but due to the game's low difficulty this isn't a problem. even the saves which can be considered luck-based to some (like the RNG trap saves) aren't that big of an issue. the avoidance has some unique stuff about it, like how the aimed Japanese characters can come in different orders. still it's just an easy barrage fight
for whatever reason I used to really despise this game for having an RNG gimmick back when I first played it around 2016. I have no idea why, it really isn't difficult or bad at all

as long as you manage to tough it out through the intro (which is kinda long and boring), you'll get to play a very fun Miku pattern avoidance. every pattern transitions into the next quite well, nothing really leaves you in stupid positions and most, if not all your deaths will most definitely be your fault. there's one exception to this, and that's final. final is the hardest attack by far and requires some pretty difficult reading, just due to sheer bullet density and your inability to jump too often due to the walls constricting your movement. every pattern is just plainly and simply fun to execute and takes just the right amount of know-how to figure out. consistency won't really be an issue since it's 75% pattern and 25% RNG, you can just kinda hope for the best if you can't read too well. it is quite long though, it should be taken seriously for what it is. it's not very easy to learn this game blind

For: I wanna find a Needle in a Haystack 2
For: I wanna find a Needle in a Haystack 2
Haystack 2 pulls off being messy and weird in a good way, so much so that it turns chaotic and absurd. unfortunately, Haystack 2's father-game of sorts - CN1, completely fails at this and just remains plainly messy, uncomfortable and really difficult. this game exhibits tons of strange jumps and a whole lot of odd and unusual movements that are most definitely different from anything you've previously played. this game has a unique atmosphere, having no music at all. while it's a brave design decision, I feel it fits the game, as I can't quite picture what the right soundtrack for this type of needle would be
there are several 'needle takes' as I like to call them. I'd define 'needle takes' as weird, unusual and crazy-looking jumps. a prime example of this would be the final screen of Haystack 1 - featuring CN1 floor 80.. with a double diamond at the end. this game features quite a few, none quite as crazy as that one, though. speaking of double diamonds, there's a save with essentially two double diamonds and more difficult needle in between (f29). f32 is notably bad as it contains the worst save in the game - an annoying, grindy (precision?) save. this one took by far the most deaths and I consider it the hardest save in the game, due to the sheer unsatisfying-ness of the jumps and their difficulty. that upwards platform jump isn't that fun either. however, the game immediately gets back on its feet with f34 and f35 which were both quite fun. f36 was rather weird and unfun due to the last 'segment' in the top left, which I choked numerous times. f41 is the strangest room I've ever seen in my entire life, it really makes you think. f45 is comical and very creative but easily cheesable if you know how. f47 is very hard and f48 is the best room in the entire game. legitimately one of my favorite rooms in any game ever. insanely fun and insanely good. this is peak Kale creativity, it truly shows how much one man can do with so little. the last room in the game, f51 is essentially one final deathrun with a bunch of gimmicks and stuff you've played before in the game. cycles, traps, gimmicks, cherries, classic needle, triggers, moving platforms. it's got it all in one screen. notably the last platform jump is quite hard and I don't really know what the last two platform corridors are about, I'm assuming one of them kills you though
overall a very mixed bag in every sense - anywhere from piss easy to very difficult; anywhere from really bad and unfun to extremely well-made and very fun
