For: I Wanna Travel the Night
Consisting of a multitude of stages each with their own unique enemies and platforming design and alongside a plethora of cutely designed and fun-to-play boss fights, Travel the Night makes for a wonderful little adventure, and most likely my favourite game to come from Erik.
It has that signature Erik style visually, although it feels more varied and improved from past games. A slight gripe I used to have is that things often felt quite same-y visually, in that graphics were often fairly dark and featuring a night-time sort of environment. Whilst this is still present, areas such as the Pyramid or the Underwater area felt like a nice change of pace, and the BOT boss in particular felt like a big change of style from what I'm used to seeing which made for a nice surprise, and maybe my favourite boss in the game. The level design is also solid throughout and the enemies (which are very adorably drawn each with their own personality) are placed accordingly to create some fun challenges throughout.
I was a big fan of this game. I'd still like to see some slight departures from the darker-style and venture into more unfamiliar territory, such as brighter and more zany areas or perhaps a wider variety of boss styles, but they're small gripes really. From the charming original artwork to the wide selection of bosses and mini-bosses and even the text-to-speech, it's just a fun adventure all around.

For: I Wanna Rid The Black Mist
An interesting first game from Lovey. Consisting of 3 stages, Black Mist features an unsettling atmosphere mixed with some simple yet effective platforming, often making use of triggers (in this case, the black mist) to open the way forward. A highlight for me would be the little miniboss/avoidance mid-way through, which I felt was designed in a fun way!
I find the rain/visual background effects to be a bit noisy on the eyes, although there is a mode on the main-menu to play without the FX which is a nice addition. There's some cool ideas in here that I think can be made more effective with some more inventive and stylised platforming, no doubt which can develop over time.
A respectable first game and one that shows a fair deal of potential. I'm looking forward to seeing your future projects Lovey if you keep at it!

Graverobber is a real standout submission for the contest. Everything from the humourous story to the inventive level design and the very polished atmosphere and attention to detail makes it a very memorable shortventure. You have a very good ability to create memorable platforming in small spaces, something which I feel isn't easily done. Aside from the normal platforming which was enjoyable, the graves themselves all felt unique and had their own gimmick or design which made them stand out, and I always looked forward to robbing my next grave to see what lied in wait. The jester grave in particular was a standout. I also like the miniboss in the pre-graveyard area, which was a reference I didn't expect to see. The theme was integrated creatively and the background effects made the atmosphere feel that bit more special.
I somewhat struggle to find things I disliked, as it felt like a really well-made small package. I'd generally say I'd have liked to see it go on for longer or perhaps a boss to round things off, but given there were mini-bosses of sorts and the contest requirements in terms of length, it fits the brief pretty perfectly. A couple of the spider segments weren't initially obvious on timing but a couple of deaths later it wouldn't be a problem.
Overall not just a great entry but just a great game on a whole. My favourite game of yours and very likely my favourite submission from the 2018 shortventure contest. Very fun stuff!

For: Endless Mirage Demo
For: Endless Mirage Demo
Endless Mirage in its current state stands as a demo for a hopefully one-day finished game. I'm thoroughly looking forward to the finished product, as the current state looks very promising. Right from the get-go the production value is staggering, with all original sprites and a very polished atmosphere, mixed in with some simple yet fun gimmicks and a puzzle or two, it captures that good ol' adventure feel.
As you'd expect with it being a demo, it's somewhat on the short side. However, the quality definitely makes up for it. It strays somewhat from traditional fangames and adapts a slightly different style, although one that should no doubt feel familiar to most fangame players.
A very nice taster of a game. Looking forward to the complete version!

For: I wanna enjoy my yellow shoes 2
Yellow Shoes 2 is a charming adventure that moulds into the Shortventure theme very nicely, starting as a simple and sweet adventure before descending into the dark and spooky depths. One of my favourite parts about the game were the textboxes, and in combination the writing. It was all done in an often humourous and charming way which helped encapsulated the adventure feel. The level design also felt well thought out, particularly to regards to backtracking in certain segments which can very easily feel like a chore, but was managed in a way that made it feel different and/or faster than before. The curse gimmick was interesting, although I felt perhaps a slight increase in time might've alleviated some of the trickier saves, most notably the first red/green vine save. I particularly liked the final stage, which utilized the laser gimmick in fun ways and suited the stage atmosphere very well.
As mentioned previously, I feel some of the saves in the cursed cave area stung a little in difficulty compared to the rest of the game, which can partly be attributed down to the gimmick introduction and getting used to the timing. I think introducing the gimmick with a couple of easier saves might work nicely, or just lengthening the curse bar a little bit to avoid punishing really small mistakes. I was also a little confused in the large water area, which took me a few moments to understand what exactly I was looking for. Small things such as an indicator of the jellyfish direction or slight nerfs on precision for some saves (such as in the laser area) might also make the gameplay flow smoother.
Overall though this was a really nice shortventure, and just made for a fun play. I also especially enjoyed the end boss, which felt like a fitting boss character given the theme alongside some fun attacks and reasonable difficulty. Good stuff Asza!
