For: I wanna be the Sorrow
For: I wanna be the Sorrow
Sorrow is a zany oldschool adventure game with a number of shorter stages off a hub and a final stage. It focuses on a lot of really wacky gimmicks and mechanics.
For an old game, its production is where you expect it - there's some default tiles and some better stuff but mostly pretty stripped down and simplistic.
The platforming is all over the place. The mechanics can be janky as hell, the obstacles can be a total mess but the variety keeps it interesting and azure does a very good job of stopping a save at a reasonable time before it gets annoying. The trigger stage was probably my favorite and the vstring/pixelogy stage my least favorite.
The bosses are true to his style as well - they're generally kind of unbalanced but compensate for that by being short, making attempts fast and furious. The only one that was frustrating was the final boss a bit, which felt like such a crapshoot as to whether or not you'd ever get to hit it.
Overall, it's dated for sure and is not an amazingly polished game, but its the old school fangame that I appreciate for its variety and creativity, even if the production and balance is a bit wacky.

Happil/K3 wannabe, unfinished version .1 that ends in stage 2.
It really doesn't do anything new. Actually, I lied, it does do one thing new. It replaces the death sound with random anime girl screams so you get to listen to that, immediately followed by the happil title card noise.
Other than that, what you expect. Clown fiesta boss, extremely bland screen picks (many of which overlap with K3/Z3/Happil) including, of course, all 3 CTBs. Even has the stop/go gimmick from CTB3 except with random timings and cycle overlaps so sometimes you just get to wait for 15+ seconds at a time.
There's some production behidn the thing but its so tiresome. The maker seems capable of making something decent but this sure isn't it.

Somewhat of a classic but honestly feels a lot older than it is. Its got a ton of charm and personality but despite that, the most memorable parts for me were the bad ones where it feels like it wastes a lot of the players time.
Production wise, there's definitely some ups and downs. It has restarting music (and restarting lag, which is upsetting in a fangame) as well as some weird camera/resize shenanigans which make it a bit annoying at times. There's definitely some cool parts as well, with the TTS voicing and weird segmenst and the extended intro.
Platforming wise, its trap heavy. For the most part its very easy but occasionally there's a wildly out of place segment that kind of hurts the flow. Additionally, there's some segments that while are interesting initially just end up being tedious because they're very long segments where the player just gets screwed (there's like a 10 screen save for instance where there was a tough cycle at the end that I messed up, which I thought was pretty meh until I got back and found it was due to highly varied random fruit speeds which went from meh to just plain stupid). Outside of that though, there's a number of good traps and interesting gimmicks scattered throughout which were fun, just unfortunately tainted by the fear of what could go wrong.
The tedium of these were easily outdone by the tedious boss segments. The quiz segment really stands out - not because its in Japanese and I couldn't read it, that I can live with, but the fact that it takes 1 second to answer a question and 10 seconds to stand there doing nothing between them makes the trial and error aspect tedious. Likewise, the spike segment was pretty much a drag throughout, either because they're bland, long or the trial and error aspects. Also as someone who tends to look away after boss kills, this can present a problem too since a number of them end in moving platform segments that will screw you over if you don't pay attention. The final avoidance was really fair and had a lot of good stuff - definitely enjoyed it more than I thought I would for a >4 min avoidance.
All in all, its got a lot of good parts but it had too many speedbumps to really feel like a fun, cohesive experience. I can't help but feel like there's better games of the style, but if you've exhausted those and want more then wanyaaaaaaaaa definitely still has lots to offer.

For: I wanna be the Archfoe2
Short saves, precise needle. Its okay in parts but there's some dumb things that drag it down. Also required 1f for reference.
Aesthetics are as expected from an archfoe game and not really worth talking about except in the regard where it hurts gameplay. This is where water all looks the same but the individual tiles are sometimes water1 and sometimes water2, which in the land of precise needle is pretty dumb when you can't see where the breakpoints are. Likewise, in the 7 screens of the game, there was already some repetition in jumps/ideas which feels like it could've been done better (like fewer upward sphincters and squished gates).
It does what it sets out to do, but not particularly well for me.

For: I wanna be the Simple 10 series vol.11
For: I wanna be the Simple 10 series vol.11
The final entry in the simple 10 series which is a series of 10 screens around a single gimmick with a super basic implementation.
No music, one static tileset (which does look alright).
This is all boss fights, with some decent variety though every boss pretty much just has a single attack. Nothing stands out as being that interesting, but there wasn't anything objectionable either.
